A water color and pens artwork that I made last spring. I have not had time to make much art recently due to school. I am excited for summer break!
After months and months and months of work, I am very proud to present something to you, an art piece that I can physically hold.
(Ignore that I actually finished her like two months ago and kept forgetting to post shhh she is my baby I am protective)
[ID: Several pictures of a white cat sculpture on top of a wooden staff that has been stained purple. A tail made from faux fur is glued to the back of the sculpture, and is twined around the staff. The cat is almost completely white except for black closed eyes and a pink nose and inner ears. The sculpture is attached to the staff with a wooden closet pull socket painted pink and purple. END ID.]
This is Ghost. She's quite a creation; if you were to cut her open, you would find that inside is a Dr. Pepper bottle that has been wrapped in layers and layers of cardboard, masking tape, and paper mache. That sounds flimsy, but she's actually quite sturdy.
She was headless for a while, and her head is made from crumpled- up paper and tape with layers of paper mache to make it sturdy.
The base of her tail is pipe cleaners woven together in a braid, and then faux fur on top. I learned to sew on her; there was an earlier, worse version of her tail lol. Props to the furry community for teaching me how to work with faux fur.
But, here's a secret:
[ID: Two pictures of the sculpture detached from the staff from different perspectives. The wooden closet pull socket is still at END ID.]
She comes off! The pull socket is permanently attached to her butt, but the staff is not. The socket and the staff are both 1 1/8 inches in diameter, so together they fit very loosely. I tightened the gap with some black paint, as you'll see in the next picture.
[ID: Two pictures of the staff, one close and one farther away. The staff is stained purple. The very top of the staff has been painted black with acrylic paint, and a little bit down the staff is a piece of velcro. END ID.]
Then, the velcro helps to secure her poseable tail in the right position by biting at the fur fibers. The staff is 48 inches tall, and is 1 1/8 inch diameter at the top, but is thinned down toward the bottom. I did this with a wood carving knife.
As you can see, the staff is STAINED purple, not painted. You can see the wood grain underneath. It was stained using a foam brush to draw on purple fabric dye. Then I sealed the color the same way I did on the sculpture, with modge podge and then some clear spray paint.
There's a little secret at the bottom of the staff, too:
[ID: The bottom of the staff up- close. A Flapjack tattoo is drawn on with black and white paint. END ID.]
This all began when I saw a video on YouTube of someone making Owlbert out of a Listerene bottle. Those who know me know I'm addicted to Dr. Pepper, so I was drinking some while watching the video. I stared at the bottle in my hand and had an epiphany. Great ideas can come from anywhere!
