‘Moony, what’s this?’ Remus looks away from the pan on the stove and sees Sirius staring quizzically at his fridge.
‘It’s a magnet,’ he explains easily. ‘Mum gave it to me.’
‘So it’s a Muggle thing? How does it stay up?’ Sirius’s voice gets louder and he tentatively pulls at the magnet, flinching slightly when it comes off. ‘Oh my God, I’m sorry!’
‘Calm down.’ Remus shuts him up and lowers the heat of the stove before walking over and taking the magnet from Sirius’ hands, putting it back in place. ‘It sticks back up. See?’
Sirius’ eyes almost glimmer, a relieved look on his face. ‘That’s brilliant! How does it work?’
‘Every substance is made of tiny units called atoms, every atom has even tinier particles that spin around and generate an electric current.’ Remus explains while walking back to the stove, Sirius behind him and a fond smile on his face as he remembers the days his mother would be the one explaining the workings of the world to him. His mother was smart. ‘Usually these particles spin in opposite directions and cancel each other out, but for things such as magnets a lot of them spin in the same direction and cause attraction to other materials in which the particles are spinning the other way. Opposite magnets attract each other, because they seek balance.’
He can feel Sirius’ arms sneak around his waist and Sirius’ chin resting on his shoulder.
‘Aw! That’s just like us!’
