Little Remus sobbing "I thought I was a good boy" into Hope's shoulder over and over when he first heard what wizards say about werewolves.
Hope Lupin meeting her son's boyfriend for the first time at the train station after summer break and seeing his tattoos, jacket, split lip, and jewelery and for a second thinking "Really? That one? Surely even you can see he's trouble" right up until Sirius spots Remus and his whole face lights up in absolute delight and he flings himself into his arms squealing
I just know Hope did not believe the newspaper that was waiting in her mail.
“Sirius Black, former heir to the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, murderer.”
No, Hope thought. Not Sirius. Not the boy who stayed after dinner to help with the dishes. Not the boy who drank tea before bed and always, always remembered exactly how she liked it. Not the boy who laughed too loudly in her kitchen and called her Mrs. Lupin even when she had already told him he could call her just Hope.
No. The newspaper must have gotten it wrong. Because murderers did not send handwritten thank-you notes, and they did not look at her son as if he hung the moon.
Lyall and Hope Lupin with their son Remus, circa 1960.
the first time sirius slept over at remus house, hope couldn’t look them in the eyes the next morning because they’d forgotten to use a silencing spell. she hadn’t even known that they were dating, or that her son was gay. she was obviously very supportive, but she would’ve liked it if she found out in a less awkward manner.
Remus sat at the Gryffindor table, scanning the morning post as he sipped his tea. Halfway down the parchment, he paused, then looked up at Sirius.
"My mum wants to know what you'd like for Christmas dinner since you're vegetarian."
Sirius, who was currently slathering far too much jam on his toast, blinked. "I don't want to impose. I’ll just eat some side dishes," he said with an easy smile, though his ears went a little pink.
Remus shook his head. “She wants to make sure you have something to eat other than potatoes and squash.”
“Wait—wait—hold on.” James set down his fork with a clatter. “You’re going to Moony’s for the holiday?”
Remus continued reading, ignoring James’ flailing. “She says she’s happy to make whatever you prefer.”
“I really do like potatoes and squash,” Sirius tried, sending Remus a soft, reassuring look that made Remus’ cheeks warm.
James leaned forward, scandalized. “Are you not coming home with me? Since when?!”
“What about a vegetable torte?” Remus suggested, still mentally going through recipes he knew his mum made well.
“I’d eat that,” Sirius said with a nod. “But I don’t want her to go overboard just for me. I’d feel bad.”
“Nonsense,” Remus said, finally lowering the parchment. “She’s excited to meet you. Cooking makes her happy. It’s one of the ways she shows affection.” His smile softened into something almost shy. It was obvious how much he adored his mum.
James threw his hands into the air. “HELL-LOOO? Anyone hearing me? Best mate? Abandoned?”
“Oh! I know, Selsig Morgannwg!” Remus said suddenly brightening. "Glamorgan sausage. Sirius, you'd love it."
“What’s that?” James asked, brow furrowed.
“It’s a Welsh sausage made from cheese, leeks, and breadcrumbs,” Peter said matter-of-factly between bites of porridge.
The trio stared at him.
Peter shrugged. “What? I like food.”
Sirius laughed, bright and genuine, and bumped his knee against Remus’ under the table.
Remus bumped back, smiling down at his plate.
James groaned loudly.
“Unbelievable. I lose my best friend to a Welsh mum and a plate of… cheesy leek sausages.”
“Could be worse,” Sirius said lightly. “You could’ve lost me to the potatoes and squash.”
“And you nearly did,” Remus muttered, cheeks pinking as he reached for his tea.
Young Remus: Mum, I got a question about the F-word.
Hope: What F-word?
Remus: My father.
Hope: Oh.
Remus: The fuck you think I was talking about?
remus being close to hope is so important to me
