Distribution of calcium in the body

Bone calcium (99%)

Ca^2+ and PO4^3+ form hydroxyapatite

Plasma calcium

Diffusible pool

~50% of plasma calcium is free/unbound ionic Ca2+ (physiologically important form)

~10% of plasma calcium is complexed with small molecular weight compounds (citrate, phosphate)

Non-diffusible pool

~40% of plasma calcium is bound to calcium-binding proteins and plasma proteins (albumin)

The body utilises plasma albumin-bound calcium as a circulating reserve

White Blood Cells

Neutrophil -- lifespan of 7 hours -- immune defenses

Eosinophil -- lifespan of 8 to 12 days -- defense against parasites

Basophil -- lifespan of a few hours to a few days -- inflammatory response

Monocytes -- lifespan of 3 days -- immune surveillance

B-lymphocyte -- may live for many years -- antibody production

T-lymphocyte -- may live for many years -- cellular immune response

Classification of Hormones

-- hormones can be chemically classified into four groups

Amino Acid Derived -- made from modified amino acids

Polypeptide and Protein Hormones -- chains of amino acids -- normally about 100 amino acids long -- some are glycoproteins -- glycoproteins contain glucose or other carbohydrate groups

Steroid Hormones -- lipids synthesized from cholesterol -- characterized by four interlocking carbohydrate rings

Eicosanoids -- lipids synthesized from fatty acid chains of phospholipids -- fatty acid chains of phospholipids are found in the plasma membrane

Red Blood Cell Disorders

Hypotonic -- the cells inflate and eventually burst -- too much water is transported into the cell

Isotonic -- the amount of water transported into the cell is equal to the amount of water transported out from the cell -- the “normal” blood cell -- solute concentration inside the cell is equal to the solution outside the cell

Hypertonic -- the cells shrink -- too much water is transported out from the cell -- solute concentration inside the cell is lower
