🤘  A Pedunculated Papillomatous Punk  🤘

Just a rebellious filiform wart.

This small wart was removed from the face near the eyes. It is referred to as filiform because of the thin ‘threadlike’ spikes (punk hair) that protrude from the surface. The wart is pedunculated which means that it is suspended from the skin by a stalk of dermis (the punk’s neck and body). 

Warts are benign growths that usually appear as a result of infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) of which there are many different types (over 130!). The one that most commonly springs to mind is the type that causes genital warts (like HPV 6 and 11) but most common warts, like this filiform wart, are not sexually transmitted at all and are caused by HPV types 2 and 4 mainly.

Filiform warts are more of a nuisance than anything because they tend to grow in the thin skin around the eyelids where they can become irritated and can bleed if they get caught or scratched. Many people elect to have them removed by a dermatologist.

13/11/17 Today I had my first integrated structure and function session. We got to practice our anatomy and palpation on the live animals (with a few animal cuddles in between) and had a station to help us with our palpation skills too. I love things like this because it helps join our anatomy from lectures and point to points to veterinary skills. It's also nice to spend some time around the animals too.
