September in the greenhouse

The tomatoes are coming to an end but there are still trusses that await full ripening. I love the shading from full, ripe red, through orange to yellow and then green on the trusses. We have tried to wait until all are ripe but it is impossible as the first to ripen need to be picked well before the last are turning. 

The large striped tomatoes are a heritage variety called “Red Pear”. They are fleshy and good for cooking but without an intense flavour. However most of the cherry tomatoes pictured are a variety called “Piccollo”  and they are the best flavoured cherry tomatoes we have tasted.  We also have an unknown variety from seed brought back from a recent holiday. These are mid sized and a very dark red colour and we will save seed for next year’s sowing.

The chilli plants have been productive and are ripening well. as usual we will have far more than we know what to do with but chilli jam will be made soon.
