Class Feature Friday: Dragon Mystery (Oracle Mystery)
Typically, dragons are associated with arcane magic. However, dragons associated with divine creators, and draconic gods do indeed exist. By grace of that fact, occasionally a mortal is imbued with dragon-influenced divine essence, giving rise to a dragon oracle.
Such oracles tend to develop very draconic personalities, being cerebral and reclusive, and oftentimes being prideful, with a temper to match. Of course, this is hardly a indicative of the entirety of such oracles.
As you can imagine, this mystery blesses the bearer with many abilities associated with dragons, much like it’s equivalent in the sorcerer class, though of course these oracles get to make more choices concerning what powers they inherit.
They do, however, get to choose an element, and by extension a species of true dragon to be associated with, though without homebrewing, they are limited to the four basic energy types.
In any case, this mystery adds an interesting arsenal of powers to the oracle, as we will soon see.
The spells associated with this mystery offer a variety of draconic trappings, such as the ability to strike fear into foes, resist both energy and magic, fly, see through magical deception, transform into a dragon, and even elicit overwhelming awe in others.
Of course, what oracle mystery would be complete without revelations? One allows the oracle to tap into that classic draconic power, unleashing a breath weapon of the element they are associated with.
Another hardens their skin with draconic scales, granting them increased durability and appropriate energy resistance.
The association with the arcane allows some oracles to tap into draconic power to learn and cast an arcane spell a few times a day.
Other oracles begin developing draconic senses, starting with sight, but then later improving to include an uncanny awareness of nearby creatures.
Even without spells, some oracles can turn into dragons, the power and majesty of their draconic forms increasing with their mastery. Furthermore, they can eventually stay in draconic form for much longer, and a few can even take on esoteric, imperial, primal, or outer dragon forms.
By exuding raw draconic presense, some are capable of unnerving foes, putting them on edge.
Many of these oracles harden their defenses, causing them to become even more durable and become resilient against various draconic immunities.
Becoming more physically like dragons, some can extend a draconic tail (or harden their preexisting tail) to use as a whipping bludgeon against foes that leave themselves open.
Like some others blessed with draconic powers, some of these mystics learn to grow fearsome claws which grow in lethality as they master their powers, eventually exuding the element that they are associated with.
Some of these oracles can even manifest dragon wings, allowing them a few minutes of flight, eventually gaining greater speed and indefinite usage.
The most powerful of these oracles, however, become living avatars of draconic power, gaining immunity to paralysis, sleep, and their chosen element, and even allowing them to use the breath weapon revelation limitlessly, albeit with a recharge time.
This mystery is very useful for an oracle build that isn’t afraid to get into the fray, both either as a damage-dealing blaster or as a melee combatant. You’ll definitely want to invest in those fear spells and other control spells so you can keep foes from grouping up on you and the party, allowing you to wade in with blasting spells and unleashing fearsome draconic forms.
The exact relationship these oracles have with dragons can help make for a variety of different character inspirations. Some may be entirely worshipful of dragons, and see themselves as blessed to be able to use their powers. Others, however, may see this divine path as one of the many ways to “become” a dragon, even if temporarily. (or perhaps permanently, powerful magic can do a lot.)
Channeling the power of a forest dragon, Desku was driven from his village for the association with the menace such imperial dragons represent. However, the vanara has not let that slow his stride. Instead, he seeks to understand where his power comes from, and why he has it.
Led by the voice of the great Wyrmlord, Imix the kobold oracle is on a quest to “free the children.” Exactly what this means becomes apparent when his travels leads him to an alchemist’s basement, where he finds the preserved and jarred bodies of many a dissected wyrmlings, the products of terrible experiments. Worse still, some have animated into pickled punks, sporting enhanced, vile powers.
A priest proselytizing is nothing new, but when the dragon priest came to the city square and began calling for the people to abandon their gods in favor of the coming “Storm King and his armies”, few paid him mind. However, when the dark-scaled cloud dragon appeared, raining down bolts on the city, people began to pay attention.
Pickled Punk
I wrote a poem about the fetus sideshow attractions of yesteryear: Pickled Punk They gasp as they gaze at your jail that's your bain; Behind glass floats a babe, never christened a name Picked Punk, Pickled Punk Never given the chance to become a star; You can't get very far from inside your jar Pickled Punk, Pickled Punk Full of forlorn, your crumpled up form; sulks as it soaks, oh you never were born Pickled Punk, Pickled Punk Your eyes frozen shut, but it's just as well You don't have to see, to know its hot in hell Pickled Punk, Pickled Punk
Headcanon: out of Dieter's collection of wet specimens, his favorite is his beloved "pickled punks"-- a pair of head-conjoined twins that he acquired around 1943.
^pickled punk is the term for unborn/stillborn infants in jars, usually preserved for freakshows or science.
