Worthing, Bar 42 on Sunday
A note.
I have seen first shows from bands before. Melody Dog, in a bedroom in Glasgow. Formica Tops, London. Some others. There is a special kind of magic involved: the nerves, the laughter, the occasional friend shouting encouragement. I do not believe I have seen a first show for a few years. I saw one in Worthing a couple of days ago - a hurried car journey across to our neighbours, lured by the promise of another face. Worthing still stands proud, drunk, leaning. A cosy windswept magic.
I would like to impart some of that magic to you: a band called Men Oh Pause, they are playing their final (and third) song as I and Lauren need to leave because Isaac is demanding. The drummer is playing drums in a way me and Sadie have not seen before (this is good). The keyboard player recalls the magic of pragVEC, on the waspish synthesizer. This is good. The harmonies remind me of a tradition of female music that DID NOT EXIST until maybe 10 years ago. This is very good. Girlpool, specifically.

I lean over to top promoter Kev and ask if he could put The Legend! band on with them here, 30-capacity venue. He smiles knowingly.

P.S. It was not their first gig. I have no idea why I thought that. "Ah," but I hear you think. "It must have been the first gig for your kids." Uh, no. Isaac in particular has seen dozens including Sharon Jones, Kylie Minogue, Clag, Holly Golightly. Also, they played more than three songs. Huh. There was still a special kind of magic, however off target I am. Uh. Huh.
DrumReef42 by ComboColab and Stereotank at Pier 42 on the East River waterfront as part of Paths to Pier 42, which brings art, design, and educational installations created in collaboration with neighborhood residents, and a series of public events to the Lower East Side Waterfront. The project builds on neighborhood advocacy to create more accessible green, open space on the waterfront, by increasing access and creating public uses of Pier 42 while it awaits permanent transformation over the next several years.
Guess what I found on my Saturday speedwalk by the East River? A little free library at Pier 42 between the Williamsburg and Manhattan bridges.

Paths to Pier 42 is a proposal for a series of temporary art/educational/design installations and public events along the East River Waterfront that will take place in the summer of 2013. The Lower East Side Waterfront Alliance is organizing this participatory process to increase access and create temporary public uses while areas of the waterfront from the Brooklyn Bridge to East River Park are awaiting capital improvements.

A community day is scheduled to coincide with the second annual New Museum Ideas Festival in May. It had been postponed due to the wrath of Hurricane Sandy.
$14 Million for Pier 42
We just came from a press conference with U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer and NY State Senator Daniel Squadron who announced that $14 million had been secured for Pier 42 from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. This exciting news is the result of many years of advocacy on the part of community leaders from the O.U.R. Waterfront Coalition (which HSC is a part of) and Community Board 3. Schumer, Squadron, and along with Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe reinforced the idea that planning for the public space on Pier 42 should come from the ground up through a community process. This is exactly the role that the Waterfront on Wheels plays. Ultimately the LMDC estimates that $40 million is needed for the entire refurbishment and transformation of the pier into a public park, but Senator Squadron stressed that this 14 million will allow the abandoned pier shed building to be demolished and for interim public access to the site as soon as a year from now.
