Then They tell Athene about the time when They were challenged to a contest by the nine daughters of Pierus and describe both Their rivals' song and that of Calliope, the Muse They chose to represent Them. The song of the Pieriae praised Typhoeus and the other giants who challenged the Olympian Gods and belittled the Gods for in fright having concealed Themselves from Their rivals by adopting animal forms. Because Her song was intended to be a response to that of Her rivals, Calliope began with a reminder of Typhoeus' defeat by the Gods, who in punishment imprisoned Him under Sicily.
