wow hi! Happy Storyteller Saturday and thank you for all the asks! You know I love to talk about all my characters. I’ll stagger them over the next couple of days probably!

My favorite part of creating a new DnD character...it’s probably figuring out what happened in their life to send them out on their adventure. It can be an intricate, convoluted backstory (like Lu has) or it can be something simple (like one of my newest characters, Gen!). Whether they’re running from something in their past, searching for something/someone they’ve lost, trying to help others, looking for fulfillment, or just kind of out for shits and giggles, there’s always going to be a reason that your character decides to go out into the world and explore it. 

It’s kind of like the concepts of objective and circumstance that I study in theatre. When I approach a role, I have to think about why the character does what they do, and what parts of their life have affected them to make them feel the way they do. It can be really hard to get into a character when you don’t know what’s driving them and what has shaped them! And my favorite part of DnD is the collaborative roleplay, so I when I create my characters I like to prep as much as I can so I can quickly and easily get in their heads once we’re around the table.
