Tacit Understanding (Pigeon wings along the river to the one I love)
She was allergic to fragrant soaps and perfumes But her skin exuded a fragile scent of Oolong tea barely steeped which came and went in the dry coastal breeze
He always smelt delectably clean And his plain raglan tee and longboard shorts belied his rakish black coffee and cigarettes (vegan) frame
Warm shivers reminded her when he peeled off his top with one arm behind his back 'I don't have protection,' she whispered That's when he knew And she knew he knew
In the moment he couldn't care less Her naked invitation to rediscover he supple curves of mid-century perfection (which put her in weekly rotations of diets and exercise) Gripped his mind with devotion
But afterwards... in the post-climatic emptiness
Hurt leaked in.
In the light of an overcast window They held each other in a tight and timid embrace But neither said goodbye
She never called him He did the same
So by the time he left their mutual pretence produced it's own inevitability - a rotten success
