4 Tips for Getting Your Skin Ready for Fall
As the weather and seasons change, so too should your skincare regimen. Think of it like you do when you make the summer-to-fall wardrobe transition. You switch out a few items and replace them with ones more suitable for the season. From late summer heat to crisp fall days, here are four tips to get your skin ready for the glorious fall season ahead.
Keep Moisturizing Your Face, but Change Formulas
As the weather begins to cool, you may notice drier skin on your face and body. Be sure to keep up your daily face moisturizing twice a day, but switch to a slightly heavier moisturizer with nourishing vitamins and hydrating ingredients, such as seaweed polysaccharides. A luxurious face cream is just what you need to get through the cold, windy months ahead.
Add a Night Serum or a Dark Spot Serum
If you’re having trouble with acne or uneven skin tone, your skin will likely benefit from a natural acne treatment, such as a potent night serum packed with vitamins or a dark spot remover serum to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Be sure to choose products with quality, hydrating ingredients. A serum is typically applied underneath your moisturizer.
Use a Lip Scrub and a Lip Balm
It’s common during the fall and winter months to experience chapped lips. Nip it in the bud before it becomes a problem. This fall, incorporate a healthy lip care routine into your beauty regimen. It doesn’t have to take up a ton of your time.
Start with a sweet and nourishing lip scrub about twice a week. It will gently slough any dead skin cells and soften your lips at the same time. Look for a refreshing peppermint oil lip scrub with nourishing olive oil, coconut oil, vitamin E, and brown sugar to help nourish and exfoliate.
Follow your lip exfoliation with an application of a lip balm with natural ingredients to keep your lips soft, nourished, and moisturized. Be sure not to use a facial or body scrub on your delicate lips!
Find a Facial Scrub
Get a glowing complexion with a superfruit-infused facial scrub to help remove flakes and dead skin and smooth away bumps. The best facial scrubs will treat your dry, flaky skin carefully without stripping your skin of its natural oils. To get a super soft, glowing complexion, choose a facial scrub with skin-brightening ingredients such as vitamins A and C, and superfruit extracts like acai berry to nourish the skin with essential vitamins and fatty acids. An award-winning product like the Acai Pulp Facial Scrub from 100% PURE is a great option to try at this time of year.
If you spend time creating a fall skincare routine and sticking to it, it will allow your makeup to go on smoother the next morning, especially richly pigmented eyeshadow, anti-aging lipsticks, and creamy full coverage foundation. Treat your skin to the best products!

4 Reasons to Switch to a Vegan Makeup Brand
In 2018, the vegan food industry recorded a 20% growth over the previous year, with sales reaching $3.3 billion, according to a recent article in The New York Times. It makes sense then that a demand for more vegan products has followed suit, especially in the beauty industry. It seems beauty trends may-often follow food ones as the two industries sometimes use similar ingredients. After all, if something is suitable to ingest, certainly it’s okay to put on your skin—right?
Have you been rethinking the products you put on your face every day? You don’t have to be a vegan to choose vegan makeup. Here are four reasons to consider making the switch, whether it’s for ethical or health reasons:
1. Vegan Makeup Usually Has Fewer Ingredients
When was the last time you read what was in your favorite mascara or eyeshadow? You might be surprised to see what’s in the formulas. Be sure to go to the brand’s website to look for a complete ingredient list of the products you are putting on your skin. They should clearly tell you on a product page if the item is “vegan” and what ingredients are in it. If you are looking for a pigmented eyeshadow from a brand like 100% PURE, for example, you’ll see that the product is made with vitamin-rich fruit pigments and other natural ingredients such as avocado and cocoa butters. The ingredient list contains all vegan components and is clearly identified as vegan. You can pronounce the words, and the list typically isn’t as long as it is on a synthetic counterpart.
2. Many Vegan Brands Are Against Animal Testing
In this day and age, there’s no reason companies should be testing on animals. It’s unnecessary and painful. However, just because a company says it’s vegan doesn’t mean it’s also cruelty-free—and vice versa. Vegan means the absence of animal ingredients while cruelty-free means the products are not tested on animals. Once again, be sure to read the labels to determine which products are vegan, cruelty-free, or both. Some companies use animal-derived ingredients such as honey, beeswax, or milk enzymes, making them not vegan. Do your research before purchasing to make sure you’re not misled.
3. Natural Ingredients Are Good for Skin
Nobody wants synthetic chemicals, artificial fragrances, or skin-irritating parabens in their makeup. They want effective, pure, skin-loving ingredients, like reparative vitamins and anti-aging antioxidants. Plus, they want natural pigments from black tea, berries, and cocoa in their natural mascara—not coal tar dyes or other less-than-healthy substances. Make sure what you’re getting is also free of synthetic preservatives and artificial colors.
4. Sensitive Skin May Benefit
If you find that your current products aren’t doing your skin any justice or are causing your skin to break out, consider vegan makeup that’s more plant-based. With fewer ingredients, vegan makeup is less likely to irritate your skin. Natural ingredients are better for your skin too. Be sure to read product reviews and consumer studies that may help influence your makeup-buying decisions.

Why You Should Make the Switch to Fruit-Dyed Makeup
Artificial colors are everywhere. They’re in our cosmetics, shampoos, foods, drinks, medicines, hair dyes, deodorants, and even toothpastes.
Some additives have a relatively safe profile and are often added to make food or make cosmetics more aesthetically appealing or to increase the therapeutic properties of products that treat dandruff or psoriasis.
However, some dyes, such as coal-tar or petroleum-derived dyes, can be very toxic if consumed or absorbed at high doses. These additives are made from petroleum distillates or by combining various aromatic hydrocarbons like toluene, xylene, and benzene that come from bituminous coal. These dyes are cheap to mass-produce and are very effective at preserving a product’s shelf life while retaining the desired color.
All coal-tar and petroleum-derived dyes are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and subject to strict standards outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations. However, some research is showing that the coal tar could have adverse effects on human health, particularly after prolonged exposure.
While a significant amount of research has focused on occupational exposure to coal tar, such as chimney sweepers at the turn of the century, more recent research in the International Journal of Dermatology reported that dermal exposure to coal tar could cause phototoxic reactions, irritation and burn, allergic dermatitis, folliculitis, acne, atrophy of the epidermis, and hyperpigmentation. Researchers also found “exposure over a long period is the main risk factor for malignancy development, even in low exposure levels.”
While not every synthetic dye is inherently toxic, consumers are growing increasingly concerned about what is in their food, beverage, and skin care products. They’re showing greater preference and even a willingness to pay more for products formulated with more natural ingredients such makeup pigmented from fruit instead of coal or petroleum.
One area where fruit dye is gaining traction is pigmented eyeshadow. Eyeshadows are commonly formulated with ingredients like talc, which acts as a filler; silicone-based binders; preservatives; and either carbon or non-carbon color pigments. Fruit pigmented eyeshadow provides the same illuminating glow of traditional eyeshadow, but is instead formulated with more natural ingredients, such as strawberry, cranberry, and acai extracts; vegetable pigments; and naturally shimmery minerals such as mica.
Another area of skin care that is swapping out synthetic additives for more natural options is facial lotions and primers. Look for products like a mattifying primer that instead use tea tree, eucalyptus, seaweed collagen, green tea, and aloe juice to sooth, tone, and protect skin while working to boost collagen production and elasticity. A silicone-free primer will leave your skin feeling clean and moisturized while also working adjunctively with the rest of your makeup to reveal a fresh, healthy look without synthetic chemicals and dyes.
Fortunately, skin care companies are working to eliminate potentially harmful and toxic chemicals and substituting more natural, eco-friendly additives into their products. Companies like 100% PURE have embraced this mission and are committed to producing the purest and healthiest products without harsh dyes or synthetic chemicals. They also work to ensure their natural skin care products are never tested on animals.
The next time you’re shopping for cosmetics, skin care, or anything really, be aware that those beautiful colors don’t always come from natural sources. Consider selecting products that work to embrace nature’s beauty and deliver products that are better for you, your skin, and the environment.
