Trying to figure out the taxonomy of my pillar men and I can only narrow them down to having descended from non-mammalian cynodonts. Figuring out which cynodonts though is difficult seeing as they’re all long dead at this point and I am not a taxonomist.

A little bit of pillar specbio today. Finally! The organs! It took me a bit to figure out the diaphragm because my creatures of darkness are not mammalian and I actually haven’t looked too closely at the diaphragms of nonmammals. Ignore that it’s a bit off, the rest of the body was added as an afterthought, honestly.

And then a bit on culture surrounding showing antenna/hair based on one singular line from Kars. I’ve thought about this a lot, actually, but never put it down anywhere, besides one drawing of Santana with a bandana covering his horns.

Been meaning to draw a sick pillar for a while, initially was going to go with baby Wamuu but I am feeling unwell myself today so there’s been a change in plans. To expand on sweating in pillars…

“Sweating” in pillars is the body’s response to high stress or illness, expelling fluids from within the body through the skin. The opposite of absorption, trying to rid the body of toxins. You can imagine it is very slimy and awful.

Misc pillar shit I don’t think I’ve put down on my blog.

Creatures of darkness aren’t especially genetically diverse. This I’m just extrapolating based on how much variation they have in their appearances. A species with more genetic diversity is more likely to have similar looking individuals because they’re less likely to produce offspring with the copies of the same genes—visual variation tends to come from recessive traits.

Tattoos are given once an adolescent reaches a certain age (haven’t figured this out yet. Maybe around 8,000?) or when they show their maturity in some other manner. Facial tattoos are given by elders, no two tattoos in a tribe are alike. Santana and Wamuu had their tattoos given to them by Esidisi and Kars, of course. Tattoos tend to have meaning bestowed by the older creature that tattooed the newly mature creature. Wamuu’s is representative of strength, Santana’s is representative of curiosity.

After awakening from hibernation, pillars may seem to sparkle. This is because they have dust and debris and crystals and grains of shit all over them that was growing or sitting there during their hibernation.

As mentioned in this post, creatures of darkness don’t wear much. They prefer cooler environments, being cave dwellers and, well, creatures of darkness, as they’re described. Less clothing covering the body makes it easier to eat in and out of hibernation, and clothing is another method used to regulate body temperature if things do get too cold and shivering or sharing body heat isn’t enough. Clothing is worn to be practical and comfortable and to express oneself. Wearing clothing to impress others is nigh unheard of.

Kars laments his species lack of imagination in the Jorge Joestar Novel, but I take that to mean specifically lack of imagination regarding the daytime and accessing it. Just based on clothing and jewelry, as well as Santana’s Gigeresque pillar, I’d think the pillar men were pretty creative creatures when it came to self expression. They make jewelry for themselves and I’d imagine also for one another, as well as clothing and other accessories. We know Kars creates the stone masks all with faces, it’s not unthinkable to imagine that the pillar men sculpt and work with metal, wood, and stone. (Especially if the carvings that the spw foundation finds are made by Kars and co..) Canon evidence aside, I think that, yes, they are creatively inclined, just not in the way Kars wishes they were, with storytelling and with finding ways to conquer the sun.

Pillar metabolism is generally slow, as I’ve said before, but this always fucking stumps me as well. They don’t have many fat reserves, so where are they storing energy?? I suppose they could have more pockets internally than I’ve thought about. Anyway, this is real to me for my pillars. I’ve mentioned how they absorb nutrients through their skin and I was unaware that there were sponges that did anything similar. That’s brilliant. I love that.

Expanding on pillar antenna with something small I drew at an event today, Wamuu and Santana both have issues with the length of their horns. Wamuu’s has an above average maximum length and nearly not enough space in the skull cavity to accommodate for the horn’s muscle, which can pinch and cause major headaches when fully retracted. Santana’s horns have a small maximum length and are turned backwards, which wouldn’t be as big of a deal if they weren’t so stubby. Unlike the other pillars, his horns don’t end up serving much of a function as sensory organs. They still ‘work,’ but what they pick up is limited.
