Change for the Worse || pillar-of-chains
She wasn't waking up. He was scared. So very, very scared. Natne frantically shook his mother's arm with all the strength he could muster, a task rather daunting for a three-year old. She was bleeding like he did when he tripped on the tree root playing... but it was like seven tree roots worth of it. She wouldn't look at him, no many how many times he screamed for her.
Sobbing and choking on the smoke of the burning sanctuary, Natne realized this was doing nothing. "Daddy!" he screamed instead, stumbling away from his mother to try to find his father. He had run off somewhere with his glow rock, but the young taguel couldn't bear the sight of his mother like that. Perhaps luckily for him, his father raced back into their residence before the toddler could leave.
His next scream for help was cut off as the large taguel snatched up son and unresponsive wife in opposite arms, racing further into the hole. "Natne, I need you to listen to me!" he ordered as the bedroom was breached. "You stay here with Mummy, and you stay silent, can you do that? It's just like hide and seek, just like we play in the woods. It'll be fun!"
"B-But Mum--" he tried to strangle out through tears and choking.
"Mummy's just sleeping!" his father assured, stroking his head and ripping away the carpet they slept on. Powerful, clawed legs tore up the earth beneath it, shoving it against the walls and creating a large hole. "As soon as the game's over, Daddy will come back, kiss her, and wake her up like in the stories, alright Natne? But first you have to hide with her and be quiet."
The youth didn't like this game as much as he had before, but gave a teary nod of understanding. Just as he did, his father pushed him into the hole, his mother following after a quick embrace. "Hide under Mummy," he instructed. "I'll be back, I promise, Natne, I promise."
The carpet was shoved over the two, straightened, and Natne could only just make out the thumps of his father's retreat. Now, all he could do was wait and try not to sob too loudly.
