Title: Lullaby of the Waves

Characters and Trope: Edér + Vela Found Family

Summary: Edér tries his best to be a good uncle and parental figure after Vela lost everything.

When kith consider places to raise their family, the deck of a ship is typically not at the top of the list of the most desirable locations. In Eora, a life of extensive travel brings as many dangers as it does opportunities, not to mention the lack of stability.

Though any place is good, in Edér’s mind, compared to the small town he once called home.

While places like Nekataka, Port Maje and Hasongo are considered relatively peaceful, the crew of the Defiant rarely has the chance to set foot on dry land for long periods of time. The seas of the Deadfire Archipelago, on the other hand, are as beautiful as they are deadly; their azure surface being a home for many pirates, miscreants and beasts alike. 

Not to mention a certain God that has recently gone rogue. The one, who sows discord wherever he appears…

Eothas. The Shining God himself.

His God. The sole reason the crew had sailed in the first place.

All for his dear friend and their adoptive daughter.

Edér was sitting on an old wooden chair, lost in thoughts. Near him, various notes and maps were strewn across the massive desk. No smoke came out of his pipe, the last of his Whiteleaf now nothing more than ash. Meanwhile, an adorable Space Piglet was sleeping soundly on his lap, without a care in the world. Edér was laying one of his large farmer’s hands on its smaller head; normally, giving the small beast headpats was something that calmed his mind. 

Suddenly, the large blonde heard a soft knock on the door of his cabin, followed by the loud creaking of the iron hinges. He gazed at the wooden door to his side, wondering if it was the helmsman with his report for the night…

Until he saw the familiar mess of brown hair, and the ever inquisitive gleam of blue underneath it.

“Uncle Edér? Are you busy with the ship?” The Orlan girl asked in a rather tired tone. Something must’ve gotten her out of her sleep.

“Nah, c’mere. Was going to leave it for the night anyway.” He stood up with a loud creak, the piglet now snoozing safely in his warm embrace.  He turned to Vela. “I thought you went to bed earlier?”

“Nope, too cold. And the sailors are loud. Can I sleep here tonight?” 

Vela stepped further into the small room, a small yawn escaping her small lips. She had a soft blanket wrapped around her tiny, fuzzy frame, all to keep at least some warmth around her. However, the vast majority of the green Wyrwool cascaded behind her, slowly tugged along whenever the Orlan moved.

It was a sight Edér thought to be just as funny-looking as it was adorable.

“Sure thing. Would you also like a story?”

“Yep.” The voice was little more than a hushed, tired peep. It was a stark contrast to her usually highly energetic self. “Can it be about Uncle Woden and the chickens?”

“Sure thing.”

“Yay!” Vela tiredly exclaimed, her long ears perking up… before launching herself with the last of her strength at the very large bed in the corner. 

Almost all of her small body, with the sole exception of her face, disappeared under the soft, green blanket. Edér followed behind, the floorboards creaking with each step he took. He then sat down at the side of the bed, laying Cosmo next to Vela. 

“Alright, so there was this guy named Hereward, who was our neighbor. Not a day passed where he didn’t talk about how he had the whitest chickens in all of the Dyrwood. Actually convinced the local butcher to pay him double than what the other farmers got…”

The little Orlan girl soon dozed off before she could hear the ending to the story with the white chickens and the old Fighter’s prank. Her small arms were wrapped snugly around the sleeping Space Piglet, a content smile on her face. The piglet snored lightly, gladly taking in the warmth of the small girl’s embrace.

Edér gazed at these two, stroking the girl’s head softly. He was happy to see her and Cosmo resting well. He knew just how much they deserve some respite from all the injustices Eora throws at them.

The large man sighed, his sight wandering towards the yellowing map. The deck of a ship is no place for a child, especially one as impressionable as little Vela. 

But they had no other choice.

The only home the little one knew had been destroyed by the God he once revered. Edér bemoans not being able to provide her with something better. He regrets seeing her life uprooted overnight, hopping from place to place, not knowing how the journey across the Deadfire will end. 

However, it was the only thing he could offer her.

While the journey they have embarked on is perilous, the alternative was, in Edér’s mind, just as awful. It would’ve broken his heart to have to leave her behind, even if it was for her own safety, as he grew to see her as his own child. And it would have no doubt broken her even more, right when she lost just about everything she held dear. Her home, her adoptive parent.

Only Cosmo and Edér were left.

In the quiet of the night, when the ship was gently swayed by the waves of the Deadfire, the Fighter made a silent promise. A promise to do his best to ensure that the little one feels loved in spite of all the chaos that life throws at her.

eyy i’ll answer the ones that haven’t been asked yet!

1. who initiated the relationship, and how did it go?

it was a lot of mutual attraction. pollux looked up at mason from under his lashes across the room and gave him a Look and that was like wheels turning in Mason’s head. so far its going good XD

2. did they have an official first date? If so, what was it like?

no not really, at least not yet. but if they did, i think i’d be something like pollux taking mason out on his motorcycle and the two of them getting lost in the woods around wayhaven. or pollux taking mason up onto one of the ridges that overlooks wayhaven and the two of them spending an evening out there like. chain smoking and drinking arnold palmer or some crap. it’d be very them.

4. were they each other’s first anything (kiss, relationship, etc.)?

no. pollux had puppy love moments in high school and his whole unhealthy relationship with bobby. and mason in all of his hundred years of experiences XD they aren’t strangers to love, but strangers to each others love.

6. what’s their relationship with each other’s families?

mason has a pretty decent relationship with rebecca based on mutual trust and respect. tbh he probably has a better relationship with rebecca than pollux does which is Saying Something about the both of them really. I’d think rebecca’s biggest worry with the relationship between pollux and mason is hoping that things don’t end the same way they did with bobby. rebecca isn’t aware of everything that happened, but she knew it was really bad and she doesn’t want pollux to be put in a position like that ever again.

8. who gets jealous easier?

neither of them really. they both sorta just have eyes for each other after a certain point, or at least only serious eyes for each other. doesn’t stop either of them from admiring others, even if it’s just that. there’s nothing to get jealous over really.

This got a little away from me, so under the cut it goes.

🌻  What little things do they notice about people or the world around them that make them happy? What tiny little treasures do they find in the normal every day that makes the world seem a little brighter for them?

Between the pages of a book at the bottom of her bag, there is list of things Maren knows. The little, certain things she knows about herself to be true, that cannot come from the echoes of lives past lived. People, places, things. Thoughts and feelings and dreams. All her grief, all her anger. All of it, hastily scrawled by the light of the fire with shaking fingers or carefully transcribed in the cold light of dawn.

Beneath that list is another list, delicately inked and heartbreakingly small. A list of things Maren knows and makes her happy.

Butterflies.

Birds and trees.

The colour blue.

The song they were playing in the tavern as retired for the night.

These little yellow flowers I found by the road.

Kana has the biggest smile I’ve ever seen.

Edér loves the cat we f

Edér loves the dog we found.

The smell of earth after rain.

I gave Aloth a book I found. His fingers twitched.

I like to think we’re friends now.

Sagani listens. She reminds me of my mother.

I gave Aloth another book. His fingers twitched again and he almost smiled.

Butterflies?

🌺  What does your OC do to calm down when they’re scared or after a nightmare? Do they have any special comfort items or need to be reassured by a specific person? How do they handle this if they’re alone?

A nightmare is a nightmare and it cannot hurt her.

But a memory is a memory and it hurts, even if the memories are not her own. These are not her hands holding the chains, soaked in blood, holding another’s as they lead to a fall. These are not her feet sunken in mud, crunching over a field of bones, stumbling as she screams and screams and screams and--

Maren.

Maren. Maren. Maren--

“Maren.”

Edér’s voice, soft and kind, somewhere above her. She turns towards him, eyes blinking, blinking. Shaking hands seeking. “Easy now,” he murmurs. “It was only a bad dream.”

No, no, she wants to say. It was more than that, more than only. Her ears still ring and her heart still aches. Her hands are wet with blood--no, sweat. She reaches for Edér’s hands, clasps them and squeezes them. Tries to remember where they are, why they are where, who they are with. Counts back the events of the day on her ten fingers (not nine, not four). The broad strokes, focuses on her companions. Their faces, their names. The memories she knows for certain are real.

And with remembrance comes clarity comes calm.

Edér squeezes back, firm and warm and real. Maren clings to it, lets the sensation slide beneath her skin and sink into her bones.

“Hey,” he says.

“Hi,” Maren croaks.

Her eyes dart around camp, moving from the low fire to one sleeping form to another. At least she didn’t wake them. She hopes.

“Seemed like a bad one,” Edér frowns.

“It was.”

“Do you wanna talk about it?”

No, Maren doesn’t say, instead: “I think I used to be a terrible person.”

Edér’s fingers spasm around hers. “I can’t pretend to understand what’s happening in your head, but I do know that was another life. Whoever that was, it ain’t you.”

Her throat closes around all the words she wants to say, thick with fear and tears. Sometimes I can’t tell the difference.

“Please don’t tell the others.” I don’t want them thinking I’m the worst of me.

Edér hums his agreement (and it sounds nice, better than--) and says no more. He doesn’t let go of her hands and for that Maren is grateful. It feels like a tether, a reminder that she is here and she is real.

A promise that the woman Edér thinks she is is true.

🌾  Describe your OC through the eyes of someone absolutely head-over-heels in love with them.

He is falling, falling, falling and there is nothing Aloth can do to slow it. No spell, no armour strong enough to cushion the blow.

This will kill him. This will kill him and--

He feels a hand cup his cheek, rough thumb brushing away a stray tear. He is too afraid to open his eyes, to look, to see. To see compassion. To see empathy and understanding in her eyes. He knows it is there, without a doubt because he has spent months looking, seeing it in her very being.

She is a good person and he yearns for her, fears her. He does not deserve her. He has lied to her, used her. Held his tongue when he could have helped her own unravelling and now she holds him, his mind, his heart, at the tips of her tender fingers.

He knows she will make the kind choice, the right choice, when he asks her what he should do. He cannot trust his own mind, his own heart in this. All he can do open himself up, bare the ragged edges of his soul, let loose the last of the secrets holding him up and trust she will catch him.

The brush of a thumb over his eyelid.  It’s okay, she says and--

There are arms and legs and body, wrapped in metal and scale and cloth, wrapped around him. Holding him tight, holding him close, changing his fate with a change of direction.

Aloth has no spell, no armour to cushion the blow, but now there is a body between him and the ground. He is too slow to realise, too slow to beg just as he was too weak to hold on.

But she was always been faster, stronger, more resolved and now--

They hit the ground.

The world stills in ears and fades in eyes. He hurts, but he lives and scrapes his hands out from between their bodies, presses his shaky palms against the stone and the grit. He pushes himself up with a cry, half pain, half agony. The body beneath him does not move.

“Maren,” Aloth breathes and touches her cheek, her eyelids. Her lips. “Please.”

Maren stirs beneath him, still alive, still breathing, and smiles a little bloody. “I caught you,” she says, voice a whisper, but it rings in his ears and fills up his chest.

“Yes,” Aloth says, relief overwhelming. “I rather think you did.”
