Doors opened as the classical music faded away to the background. Twelve nervous players shuffled inside. Your immediate response was to glance over at In-ho. Finding in the midst of the small crowd with ease. His gaze was already on yours.
The room barely gave away what the next game would be. White illuminating walls with a gumball machine in the midst. Plastic balls of various colours inside. Clearly the other players were clueless too. Looking around for anyone with confirmation or intel.
Circle pink suits lined up behind the gumball machine. The triangle pink suit stepped forwards. “Players, line up and take a plastic ball.” The instructions simple, yet revealed nothing yet. All of you lined up from numbers going upwards.
You stood two players before In-ho. Looking behind you at him. He gave you a reassuring nod. Getting on the tips of your toes, you watched as the first player approached the gumball machine. Taking out a coloured ball with shaking hands. “Yellow.” He said in a shaky voice. The triangle pink suit gestured for him to stand to the side. Next player being called out.
Taking out a teal ball. Red. Orange. Green. Purple. On and on it went till it reached your number. Nervously you stepped forwards. Turning on the gumball machine. A ball rolled out, making you swallow soft. “White.” You called out, holding it high up in the air.
At the gesture of the pink suit, you moved to join the others. Receiving a folded body suit of that colour. Staring at the remaining players, you watched In-ho approach. Holding out a blue coloured ball. Coming to join you, holding the body suit on his palms.
“The next game is Eomong-eoseu.” The triangle pink suit announced. Catching stolen glances with the remaining players. “You will each be guided to a changing room. In your suits you’ll find a tag with Keuruwon or Imposeuteo in it. That will be your role.” As his words finished, you felt your hands shake whilst holding the body suit.
An instant worry about your role. A role randomly chosen by a coloured plastic ball. The next set of rules of the game, made your knees buckle. It was the imposter’s task to eliminate crew members for their survival within the time-limit. The imposter needing to remain calm and collective during all times.
Circle pink suits came lining up before you all. Guiding you one by one to a secluded changing room. You tried to steal a glance of In-ho, but you were blocked by a pink suit. Forcing you in one of the cabinets. Pushed inside, the door clicked shut behind you. You tried the other door as it was locked tight.
Exhaling loud, you looked down at the body suit. Letting it fall open. Opening some of the buttons to find the tag. Tag sewn in the middle of the suit’s back. Gasping loud, you brought your hand to your mouth. Imposeuteo.
Opening the body suit more, you found a dagger sewn by the hip on the inside. Taking it out, the weight of your new role fell upon your shoulders. Eyes widening with realization. In-ho. He was amongst the players. If you were the imposter, that meant he was but a mere crewmate. Shaking your head, you didn’t want this role.
Wishing you could change it all, but you couldn’t. Sniffling loud, you stepped into the body suit. Pulling the cap over your head. Zipping the suit up, made you shudder out a breath.
You always knew at some point, you needed to fight. Fight for your own life. The money you were promised and the own promise you had made yourself. Clasping your fingers around the dagger’s handle, you took a deep breath. A life for a lie.
The buzzer going off, made you tug the dagger away out of sight. Waiting for the doors to open automatically. Leaving all your fears behind, you stepped through the door. Shedding your skin like a snake, for that was what you needed to be.
A viper, serpent to survive. Kill, lie and lay low in order to survive and reach the finals. Going forwards, you had entered another room. Round tables settled around. On one of them a red buzzer shining under a glass shield. Gathering at the table with the other players, you felt In-ho’s gaze on you.
Timer set on 45 minutes. Starting right now.
Players separated immediately, wanting to be lost in the corridors doing tasks before the imposter could take them. In-ho immediately went to you, grabbing you by the elbow. Shoving you away. “Are you a crewmate?” He asked in a hushed tone. You nodded with a hum, already beginning your first lie. He exhaled relieved.
“Me too.” He answered. “I say we stay together, have each other’s back while completing tasks.” Suggesting, leading you towards one of the corridors. Before you could utter a protest or come up with another lie, you were stuck. Wondering how you were going to do your duties when In-ho insisted on staying together.
Walking through the upper engine room. “In…” You began, wanting to point out one of the tasks. Ignoring it, he pulled you further through the maze of rooms. Leading you further to the back, maybe the furthest.
Reaching electrical, he moved you inside. “I’ll keep watch, you do the task.” Turning around to face the door. Nervously you stepped up to the task. Knowing as an imposter you couldn’t physically do any of the tasks. You had to come up with a lie and fast.
“I…I don't know anything about electrics?” You called out in a swift panic. In-ho sighed loud, coming over to you. “Connecting wires isn’t that hard Y/n.” He responded, making it sound so simple. “Do it fast so we can move on.” The tone of his voice getting more pressuring.
Humming anxiously, you turned back to the panel. Exhaling deep, moving your fingers to the panel. Knowing you wouldn’t be able to do the task. Hoping, praying for a miracle to release you from this terror. It couldn’t be that within the first 5 minutes, you’d be exposed for simply unable to do a small task.
“Hurry up, Y/n!” In-ho pressed on, glancing brief over his shoulder. Quickly catching his gaze back as the player in the orange bodysuit entered electrics. There was a weird tension between the two of them. In-ho, not wanting to take any chances, launched at him.
Tackling him to the ground, trying to wrap his legs around the man’s neck. The orange body suit fought back. Making them stribble against each other. The orange body suit nearly breaking free from his grip, trying to crawl his way out towards you. In-ho tensed his jaw, strapping his legs around the man’s neck. “Y/n, run!” In-ho called out.
Nodding shakily, you jumped over them. Taking a run for it. Going left through storage back to the cafeteria to have a loop-around. Not stopping with running till you had created enough distance between In-ho and you. You nearly ran past reactor, seeing someone do a task with their back to you.
Looking over your shoulder from left to right, you made sure the coast was clear. As quiet as possible, you entered the room. Slowly pulling out the dagger, keeping it pressed against your chest. Already spotting two of the vents you could escape from.
Nearing him, hands trembled on the handle. Conscious haunting you for a second. Knowing it was wrong, but what other choices did you have. The player turned around, jumping startled back at the sudden sight of you. Her eyes fell on the dagger in your hand, ready to scream.
Left with no other choice, to avoid exposure, you slashed the dagger across her throat. Silencing her. She gurgled on her own blood catching in her throat. Giving the woman a kick, she fell backwards. Brown crewmate down.
With haste, you reached for the vent, taking an escape. Dropping down, you started to crawl to the linked location. Panting loud barely giving yourself any time to reflect on it. If you would, you’d sure crash down. Reaching the lower engine room, you safely crawled out. Dagger tugged back away.
Taking a run for it. Darting into electricals, faced with an empty room. Without a second thought, you took the vents that led up to medBay or security. Taking the route to medBay, you shocked out a breath at a player in the room. Teal crewmate checking the cabinets. Watching him from the vents, you knew you needed to act now. Gripping on tight to your dagger, you waited till he had his back at you. Jumping out.
The teal player gasped surprised. Grabbing him by the shoulder, you had shoved him against the cabinets. Forcing the dagger through his heart. His last breath exhaled in your presence. Retrieving the dagger, you gasped loud. Eying the hallway, you hid him underneath one of the beds.
Looking left and right, you went back to the cafeteria. Heading for weapons. Yellow crewmate was doing his task. Swift you snuck in, slicing his throat. Blood splattered out on the weapons. “Imposter!” Hearing your role called out, made you quickly turn your head. The pink crewmate, shaking on her knees, pointing at you.
She took a run for it. Gritting your teeth you went after her. Whatever it took, she couldn’t reach that buzzer for a meeting. Letting out a deep pant, you threw your dagger at her. She let out the softest gasp, stumbling forwards.
Hurrying over to her, you pulled the dagger out of her shoulder. “Please, please, please.” She begged. “I…I…I won’t tell.” Rubbing her palms together, beggingly. You pulled her head up by her hair. “I can’t do that.” Whispering in her ear. Slicing her throat. Killing had become a second nature. Being near O2 you ditched her body there.
Taking a run for it towards shields. Going across the room, you wanted to head for the corridor. The sudden presence of a blue body suit made you bump against it. “Y/n!” In-ho panted out with worry, holding you by both your arms.
“I…I’ve been worried. I thought…I’ve seen several bodies…” He called out, shaking your body a bit in his grip. “Why didn’t anyone call for a meeting then?” You asked, curious as to how there hadn’t been a buzzer yet for an emergency meeting. “I’m guessing no one knows or had seen it. To focused on saving their own skin.” He tried to give a meaning to it.
Pulling you against his chest, he sighed relieved. “I feared looking in any room to find your body.” Tightening his grip around your body. It made you swallow nervously. If only In-ho knew he shouldn’t fear your death, but rather his own.
For a moment, in the embrace, you thought about stabbing him in the back. The less players survived this round, the higher your chances were at simply winning the jackpot after this game. The offer very tempting.
Shoving In-ho off you, you didn’t want to give in to your own deadly thoughts. In-ho had stuck his neck out for you many times. He blinked surprised at you. A nauseating feeling in your stomach. In-ho’s eyes widened with a gasp. An arm having found a way around his neck.
Slapping the arm around his neck with violence for release. The red crewmate laughed manically. “I told you I’d back at you.” He grunted out. Still holding a grudge against In-ho for his interference in the previous game. He tightened his grip around his neck. In-ho fighting for a breath. Face shading pink, cheeks swelling up.
Defenseless, he couldn’t shove him off. Your mind panicking as In-ho couldn’t die like this. Not without a proper fight. Calling it out, you ran towards the red crewmate.
Stabbing him in the shoulder so that he would release his grip. The man cried in pain, indeed releasing his grip. In-ho stumbled forwards, coughing loudly. You pulled the man back by his suit. He tumbled down.
You climbed on top of him, shoving the dagger in his eye. His body twitched once before it fell silent. Slowly you got up, the blood dripping from your dagger. Wiping your cheek with the back of your hand. Gaze locked with In-ho. His expression stunned. Your role clear to him. Imposter.
