I love your blog! What traditions of fencing do you practice?

Thank you! My club focuses on longsword by the Liechtenauer tradition. I would like to get a bit more into sabre on the side, but I never seem to have time (which is also why I haven’t picked up more disciplines yet, but someday, hopefully!)

I see a lot of heathens (and non heathens) wearing Thor's hammer around their neck. Does that represent anything in particular? Or is it more similar to a cross or star of David where it's kinda more a general symbol of the faith?

Chiefly, it’s a symbol of protection. Thor is the god who protects Midgard (Earth) and humanity, so wearing his weapon pays a kind of homage to that. It’s also a relatively well-known symbol of the religion as a whole–it’s a recognized emblem of belief by the US military, for example–so it is used by a lot of people to identify themselves as Heathen, as one might wear a cross. Up to this point at least, it has not been commonly appropriated by white supremacists in the way that some runes and other symbols (such as the valknut and sun wheel) have, so it’s a fairly safe identifier.

I can’t really speak to its use by non-Heathens, but I imagine that it’s often a case of people seeing the pendant and being told it’s a symbol of protection, then wearing it without knowledge of the religious context. There are other reasons a non-Heathen might wear one as well, such as an enthusiasm for Viking history, but I imagine that’s the most common explanation.

              The sudden voice addressing her caught her off guard as she peeled her eyes away from the Horn of Magnus, the large tower looming over the city of Ubersreik. She turned to face that of one of her own kind, they were a long way from Ulthuan and though she had left the land of her birth to chase knowledge and adventure, to see a face not too unlike hers was enough to make her heart lift with joy.

“And you also, Sir.” She smiled and gestured for him to come over and stand beside her. Turquoise eyes inspecting his garment a smile grew on her features. He was a Swordmaster. She then turned back to gazing at the tower, “How do you think they got a horn that big up there... and what kind of hap-hazard structure keeps it in place?”

                “Why thats a tough one!” Dia pondered in place for but a time before the she-elf continued to articulate herself.

“I don’t believe the perfect or ideal relationship truly does exist, I abandoned that childish fantasy long ago, but I can list desireable qualities I do look for in a Lady or Gentleman.” She adjusted herself and brought up her hands to count off the qualities she wished to list.

“I would like them to be kind, gentle and empathetic... But I do so enjoy roguish charm~ “ She giggled girlishly before continuing “I would ever so love them to be a romantic such as myself. I do often find myself pining after the affections of courtly love~ But that is perhaps my bookish ways talking. I would like my partner to be respectful and not expect me to be tied down as a homely wife... I do have achievements I wish to attain! But most of all I would like them to be my friend. For a relationship of love, devotion and friendship is truly the greatest of all...”
