Pinterest has given me something to do this weekend, will show the finished project when done.
Art to Dry Erase DIY
Art to Dry Erase DIY
Art is an interesting thing. Once you have it at your house it is only of value, really, to you. Should you decide to go in a different direction with your decor then you find yourself stuck with a collection of things that no one besides yourself would pay money for.
Many years ago we bought these two framed art pieces. Obviously, they are not big deals (they’re Ikea finds). But at that time in…

DIY LIGHT TABLE
I will never tire of the beauty of a light table, especially on a gloomy dark day. My husband made ours for Atlas (which also converts to a train + coffee/craft table) but it's really simple to make one using rope/fairy lights and a plastic tote box.
Line the inside of the tote lid with white tissue paper to diffuse the light.
Pop the lights inside the tote and put the lid back on - cord dangling out and closed as best as you can.
Turn the lights on and play!

SIMPLE DIY FATHER’S DAY CARD
Father’s day is just around the corner and we have a simple DIY card for you to make with your Curated lunch bag (or any brown paper lunch bag). It’s quick to make, uses basic art materials, and is a craft that even the littlest Curated Kid can be involved with. Here’s what you need to do:
Gather your materials - your Curated lunch bag, paint and brushes (we put our paint on a plate and taped our bag to cardboard to keep the table clean and to stop it from slipping).
Place your lunch bag words side up and paint to your hearts content. Let your little one choose the colors, but keep in mind ones that mix well so it doesn’t end up brown. Naturally my little Atlas ended up being more interested in using his hands to paint than brushes! ;)
Let dry and then fold your bag in half horizontally - the opening of the paper bag should be on the back cover of the card.
Open the card up, and glue down the fold on the inside of the front cover (which is actually the bottom of the bag).
Trace or freehand a star on this same side (the back of the front cover) and cut out with scissors. It doesn’t need to perfect - handmade cards are their most endearing when a little rough around the edges.
Print a photo of ‘dad’ to fit the front cover (around a 4″ square) and glue or tape down (I used a little double sided tape to set in place and then fastened with washi tape).
Write or print/glue a little saying into the inside of the back cover (we went with ‘we shine together like the moon & stars).
Finish off with a little handwritten note and make sure to have your Curated Kid (no matter what age) sign their name.
Slip photos, gift cards, stories, drawings, treats, and anything else you can squeeze inside the opening in the back cover - it’s a little secret pocket!
Pop in an envelope and surprise dad on Sunday 06/21 with the best card he’s ever received!
SIMPLE DIY LARGE OUTDOOR EASEL
Way back in 2013 we had been given a large piece of plexiglass and had grand plans to make Atlas an outdoor easel with it using 4X4s for a frame. This still hadn’t happened a year later, so when we took down a large tree in our yard, I had the idea to use the leftover tree stumps as a frame for the plexiglass instead of building one. Simple, free, and fast to build - what could be better?
Materials Needed:
two tree stumps
a large piece of plexiglass cut to your desired size - we had been given an XL thick piece, but you can find thinner pieces at big hardware stores. For a thicker piece like we used, you will need to find a specialty plastics/glass store.
a little chainsaw for cutting
sandpaper
How we did it:
Using a chainsaw T sliced a groove into each of the stumps (see pic above). He left one edge uncut so there would be a little ledge for paint cups etc and he only cut about 2/3 of the way down into each.
Next we sanded the tops to de-splinter them, and eventually we will seal them to help the logs last a little longer outside.
Finally we rolled the logs into place (they are heavy!!!) and slotted the plexiglass into their slots. Voila!!! Atlas now has a fabulous new easel to paint on outside and the whole project cost us nothing to make it.
***2015 update - we replaced the old logs which had lost all of their bark and weathered a hard winter outside. I also updated the post with some new photos taken this month of Atlas still loving and using the easel.***
Y’all….I can’t even begin to explain how proud I am of this project! During my Christmas break, I had a lot of free time on my hands so obviously I did something productive! ……I’m kidding so hard right now. I spent endless hours Pinteresting and watching (and becoming unhealthily obsessed with) American Horror Story on Netflix. So after about 2 weeks of vegging out in bed, I finally decided it was time to actually do something productive. So began the journey of cleaning/organizing my room…..and I actually got SO into it. I decided I wanted to completely change everything around and finally fill up these bare walls. During my hibernation those two weeks while I was on Pinterest/Netflix, I had come across a super cute DIY pinboard that I just completely fell in love with. I’m so tired of constantly pinning all of these awesome projects but never actually doing them because #lazy. But guys, I finally decided to just go do it and you would not BELIEVE how easy (and super affordable) it was…..and that’s saying something coming from the laziest and most broke 23 year old on the face of this planet.
What you’ll need:
picture frame of your size choice. I chose this elegant looking cream white 16x20 picture frame from Marshall’s for only $13.
roll of cork. I bought a roll from Michael’s and I highly recommend buying a roll with a sticky side to save you from buying spray adhesive! It was $13 but I told the cashier wearing a big “I’m 21” pin happy birthday and she gave it to me for $6. So the real story here is BE KIND PPL & U GET ALL THE DISCOUNTED THINGS. (in return I gave her $2 and told her to buy herself a shot, hehe)
any fabric of your choice. I’m a sucker for pretty colors and fun designs so naturally, I bought all the ones I wanted (because saving money clearly isn’t important, right?) (but these were all 50% off so it’s cool alright moving on.) I picked out a light pink, jade green, and (the winner) a gray and white chevron fabric. (if you buy a light colored fabric, buy a white fabric to put behind it as well just in case you can see the cork through the fabric.)
glue gun
scissors
stapler
How to assemble:
Take the display picture in the picture frame out as well as the protective glass. Keep the cardboard frame background.
Take the sticky part off the back of the cork roll and cover the cardboard side. Cut off whatever is not used. Smooth out any ripples.
Using the fabric of your choice, measure out how much you will need to cover the board (leaving about an inch or two on each side for the back.) Cut off whatever is not needed.
Iron out any creases or seams on the fabric.
Lay the fabric (design sign down) on the floor. Place the cork board (cork side down) in the center of the fabric. Pull back the fabric and either hot glue or staple the hanging pieces to the back of the frame (either method works.)
Place the cork board into the picture frame and clip it in place.
Find a place to hang it and ADMIRE YOUR NEW MASTERPIECE
I must say, I never knew I had it in me to actually finish (and succeed at) a Pinterest project but it certainly will not be my last! I can’t wait to share other projects I’ve tried and will also, in further posts, be updating the redesigning/organizing of my room until it’s finally complete! Super excited!
