Reposted from @artofmourning Catholic interpretation of ‘memento mori’ (remember you will die) is important to understand, as it differentiates from the Protestant usage of the symbols. Their intrinsic value is the same, which is mortality and final judgement, but when used in the latter 16th century for the Protestants, it becomes a message of personal improvement, wealth, education and success. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Catholic interpretation can be seen in this ring, which has several biblical symbols united with the skull and hourglass on top of the bible. The ring has the Fall from Grave and the Expulsion from Eden in the figures seen in the shoulders. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is also used as a fede (betrothal) ring, with the clasped hands in the reverse. It encapsulates the entire familial experience of life during the mid 16th century. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #catholicjewelry #medievaljewelry #medievaljewellery #piousring #weddingring #life #lifepositive #history Thanks to the British Museum! https://www.instagram.com/p/CjUOFYbu5Ut/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
