her deeply complicated relationship with religion, despite how much she's worked on it, still pervades her everyday life. she recites Luke 2:8-10 when she's scared. one night, she babysits the pike kids while the pike family is staying with shane and ilya. hayden has the baby monitor on and hears amber fussing so he opens the app and then pippas in the nursery picking amber up and rocking her gently and hayden is like "aw that's so sweet" and then softly, he hears her sing to amber, in a way only someone like either of them would recognize. she's so quiet but hayden knows the words, even if he couldn't hear them. she's sings "he's got the whole world in his hands" like it's a tether to something she's not sure she should hang on to and amber hushes. And jackie's looking over his shoulder but not close enough to hear her and she comments on how fast amber calmed and he doesn't have the heart to tell her it's because she recognizes the some. it's one of the ones hayden sings to her, while she still won't understand the words to ask him what they mean, one of the ones etched in his mind. and hayden looks at her eyes as they look at his baby and he sees not the look he and ilya share, but one of someone who didn't want to leave, but had to. the look of someone who would have given anything to stay but just couldn't. not with her soul still intact. it fucking shatters hayden and no one can get out of him why he's so quiet the rest of dinner because it is NOT his place to share it. he wraps pippa in a hug about it later. suddenly he has an eldest daughter, and even if she's only a few years younger he doesn't give a fuck. his baby now.
right now that we've covered that it's time for a TONAL SHIFT

one time, one of junes teammates actually approached luca because she's put together that june is maybe hooking up with one of his friends and she loves her goalie but she's also a girls girl so she feels like it's her due diligence to mention something. she talks to him and is like "hey i think your friend and a teammate of mine are hooking up and i don't know any of the details but our goalie is a pretty notorious player and just make sure you're friend isn't getting hurt, yeah?" and luca thinks the sentiment is so very sweet. he does not know how to explain that actually, their goalie is trapped in pippas perpetual psychosexual torture nexus and maybe they should keep eyes on her. because when the player gets outplayed it sometimes throws em

ok i feel like this is a LITTLE bit spoiler-y for pippa's back story, so fair warning, if you want to just know it through the fic you totally can, but this is going to get more of an in depth explanation!
so a little lighthearted blurb before this - im currently in my undergrad studying natural sciences (I do technically have a specific major however yall WILL make fun of my gay ass. also my classes are very expansive funnily enough so i've actually done a considerable amount in paleontology - it's what im considering for my masters) so I LOVE anything and everything to do with paleo/geo/bio sciences. It's just what i do!! so writing pippa as a scientist really was not a big stretch for me, plus, I actually love early human history (despite not majoring in anthro) and wrote my best exam ever (grade wise) on the origins of human burial. Actually, I kind of wish I still had the essay, but alas, lost to time and exam protocol.
pippa is in paleoanthropology through general anthropology - specifically, she got into it through studying religion. She has her undergrad double major in paleontology and anthropology and has a minor in theology - specifically in ancient religions. She grew up in a very religious family - deep south pastors daughter. She honestly had no idea what she wanted to specialize in, but ends up starting her PhD work right out of undergrad under one of her professors - in particular, she is investigating how religion evolved in the first place. She ended up where she is because she wanted answers, and even though she's in a much better place now, there's still a certain aspect of her that desperately wants to know why.
which kind of leads into why she fucking hates ken ham so much. Because she knows exactly the kind of person he is. She resents him because she knows that he definitely doesn't believe in the shit he's talking about, he's just a zealous bigot taking advantage of people. As for historical figures in archeology, she hates MOST of them. Unfortunately, archeology as a field has a.... rocky history. she does absolutely HATE Schliemann, for all of the history and culture lost....... she does however think it's objectively hilarious that he just fucking blew up troy. Like what a fucking moron. Funny in the way that a tragedy is funny. she does have a few that she likes: Donald Johanson and Klaus Schmidt being two of them that are more recent
recently responded to comment on my fic from someone who was like "so happy pippa didn't make luca feel weird abt the sex dream" which devolved into me extrapolating on pippas character in that she sees sex as both like an intimate thing obviously but working in anthro it's also like..... a very fundamental aspect of her field of study. so nothing is weird to her. like at all. she also knows an ALARMING amount about sex history and will pull out the most upsetting fact out of thin air.
this is all to say i've seen people talking about how shane and ilya have a d/s dynamic but like. they're not calling it that they've invented it themselves, clearly. Meanwhile they get drunk together one (1) time and pippa clocks their dynamic so fucking quickly and now thinks it's the single funniest thing in the world. shane and ilya just trying to get in some foreplay at the club and pippas in the corner with tiny glasses on and a headlamp taking notes like she's out in the field.
