Awesome. Just got a new idea for a fic. -glares at my To Write list-
Pippin/Merry because my LOTR ships are super creative like that.
Spawned from a group chat on AIM.
So basically, how is it that Pippin got the nickname "Pippin"? Considering that his name is Peregrin, it isn't exactly the easiest jump. Samwise is Sam, Meriadoc is Merry, but why did they decide on Pippin?
WELL. To say the name Meriadoc Brandybuck, no matter where you are in the Shire, is to also say Peregrin Took, for tales of their mischief will always precede them. But it wasn't always so. In fact, up until Pippin was eighteen years old, the two of them could barely stand each other.
Well, Merry to Pippin, as Pippin was too young at the time to truly realize that he wasn't wanted around.
But the first time they met, when Peregrin was three and Meriadoc eleven, the latter of the two had made a decision to dislike his little cousin. The reasoning for this? As simple as the fact that Peregrin had not yet been given the nickname "Pippin", but was instead referred to as "Perry".
As an only child, Merry was not quite as used to sharing his things, not as much as someone like Sam, who had many brothers and sisters. He was never a spoiled child, had his manners, but there were some things that were his. Such as his name. Nobody else had his name or,for that matter, a nickname quite like his. He was the only Hobbit he knew of who had a nickname that ended in "erry" and, as a young Hobbit, quite liked that.
Now here was this new cousin who had taken his nickname. And that was enough, in the mind of an eleven year old, to warrant some level of dislike. Merry also took it upon himself to rename Peregrin, deciding on Pippin. It took longer than he would have liked for it to catch on, but he got there in the end.
And I have a thing in mind about how Merry had his eye on Marigold Gamgee, but as he didn't want Sam to know, ended up volunteering to babysit for Pippin in order to spend time with Pervinca and, by association, her best friend Marigold.
