lucius snapped his head around to shoot izzy a glare , opening his mouth for a stinging retort , only to have the words die on his tongue , watching the man with observant eyes , the darkened hues lingering on the leather clad figure for a long moment as he approached. something about this interaction felt .. different. like something had changed. izzy wasn’t trying to make him do things just for the hell of it , to seek respect from the scribe , who otherwise couldn’t actually give a damn. hell , he wasn’t even attempting to sound scary. no , there was something .. off with his tone.
lucius’s back straightened a fraction , watching izzy as he snapped his mouth shut , reluctantly taking the mop back into his own hands. he tore his gaze from the man after a long heartbeat , actually taking izzy’s words into account as he mimicked what the man had done before. silence stretched between them as lucius worked , finally allowing himself a brief pause to lean against the handle of the mop , fixing his gaze back onto where izzy sat , his hip cocked , expelling a short breath , before quietly speaking. ❛ i do take pride in doing things right , izzy. that’s why i’m drawing all the time , i want to get my art .. right. ❜ why was he telling him this ? maybe because this was the first actual conversation the two had managed to have without lunging at each others throats.
the scribe tossed his hair back from his face with a huff , finishing his task with a final awkward drag of the mop , wandering over to the opposite end of the deck , to set the supply over by the broom. another crew - mate could deal with that , he couldn’t be bothered. hands on his hips , he wandered back toward izzy with a sharp exhale , opting to fan his face with an open palm , before clearing his throat & stopping in front of him , brows inched toward his hairline. ❛ look , um .. my offer to sketch you , it .. it still stands. i might’ve said it in the heat of the moment , but .. i think it might do you some good. ❜ the scribe tilted his head slightly , watching the first mate with reproachful hues. actually addressing izzy like a normal person , not his nagging bully , felt strange. he swore he’d seen something almost vulnerable about izzy when he’d shown him how to clean. like he was actually giving a shit.
tongue jabs at the inside of his cheek , hands on his hips as he rolled his shoulders , lolling his head to the side as he squinted against the sun , peering at izzy through fanned lashes. ❛ it’s quite relaxing , being sketched by someone who isn’t there to judge. maybe if you relaxed , you’d be a little less .. stressed. ❜
Izzy had said that he would keep an eye on Lucius as he worked and he did. Backing down now would get him nowhere but further at the butt of the scribes jokes to the crew. To Hands’ surprise, Lucius actually started to swab the deck correctly. Sure he still looked like it was the last thing he wanted to be doing and didn’t bother to hide that from his expression but it was better than nothing.
“Your fucking art doesn’t keep this ship running,” he huffed, waving off the conversation so as to not distract the younger man from his task. It took everything just to keep this crew focused on actually working sometimes.
Naturally, Spriggs stopped about halfway on the deck surface which -- to be fair this was usually a job more than one crew member did for time efficiency. He bit back the desire to order him to do the rest of it. Izzy guessed he had to take what he could get with this idiot. Still, the first-mate rolled his eyes as Lucius unceremoniously deposited the cleaning gear on the other corner of the ship for someone else to complete.
Izzy had been about to stand up from his seat and just take his leave before they could argue more, but the scribe was headed back for him. The surprise of that offer coming up again shown on his face. “Oh mother,” he muttered under his breath, standing up quickly.
He fidgeted with the cravat at his neck, as if he’d suddenly felt it was too tight. The image of the last sketch session he’d walked in on was still burned into his brain. “This is your fucking problem. Relax? We’re PIRATES. We don’t get to relax. Not really.” He wasn’t yelling exactly but he sounded stressed, flustered even perhaps as he’d stammered through his words some. God. He sounded like Edward. Telling him to take a breath because Izzy was always wound so tightly it was no surprise how often he snapped at people. Yet he was looking Lucius’ face over, trying to find proof that the man was just trying to trick him. To get him into a compromising position of some sort. To use it against him with the rest of the crew. In fact he half expected them to be hiding, ready to pop out and have a good laugh if he said yes.
Standing between the two canons with Lucius standing in front of his escape, he side stepped either way until he could get around the man, hands raised up in defense in an almost ridiculously dramatic fashion. He took four steps towards the door below deck before stopping and sighing harshly. “Fine. But I’m not taking my fucking trousers off for you.”
