The painting was created shortly after Pissarro fled to England to escape the outbreak of World War I. The war had a profound impact on Pissarro, and his paintings from this period often reflect a sense of anxiety and uncertainty.

O Café Gerbois
Na década de 1860, um lugar ficou famoso por ser ponto de encontro do grupo de pintores impressionistas que estava se formando. O Café Gerbois ficava no número 11 da Grande-Rua das Batignolles. Todas as quintas-feira ao final do dia, encontravam-se lá artistas como Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Camille Pissaro e Pierre-Auguste Renoir. O espaço também foi citado no romance "A obra", escrito por Émile Zola e supostamente inspirado em um dos integrantes do movimento e amigo pessoal do escritor: Paul Cézanne.
