Including Youth in PIT Counts

Alliance Partners to Host October 4 Webinar

On Thursday, October 4, 2012, at 1:30 p.m., the National Alliance to End Homelessness (the Alliance) and three of its partners will host a webinar, “It’s a Data Driven World: Making the Most of the 2013 Youth-Inclusive PIT Count.” The session will highlight three communities that have successfully performed targeted youth counts.

The Alliance is partnering with the National Network for Youth, the John Burton Foundation for Children without Homes, and the DC Alliance of Youth Advocates to host the webinar, which will:

Inform youth providers, advocates, and allies about how to partner with Continuums of Care (CoCs) to ensure a successful count,

Provide concrete strategies for CoCs regarding promising practices and methodologies,

Show how to incorporate them into the youth-inclusive Point-In-Time (PIT) count in 2013,

Provide guidance on how to incorporate school data into PIT counts, and

Provide effective strategies for counting youth in rural communities.

Conducting Targeted PIT Counts of Youth

Alliance Makes New Resources Available

The National Alliance to End Homelessness (The Alliance) has resources to assist in planning for a successful youth-targeted Point in Time (PIT) count effort. They are available now for communities currently planning for their 2013 HUD mandated counts.

The resources include:

Counting Homeless Youth Toolkit: This toolkit outlines six recommended steps to include youth in PIT counts;

Including Youth in Your Community's PIT Count Webinars: A two part webinar series is available. Part I discusses improving the quality of data on youth homelessness. Part II provides in-depth case study of the specific actions San Jose, CA took to include youth in its PIT counts; and

Practice Briefs: Two briefs profiling San Jose, CA and Washington, DC provide information about the planning, implementation, methodology, and use of data in these community's targeted youth PIT counts.

Innovative New Strategy Includes Youth in PIT

Strategy Addresses Undercount and Finds 62% More Youth

The City of San Jose in Santa Clara County, California has adopted new, specialized strategies to include youth in its biennial Point-In-Time (PIT) count. This effort began after local homeless youth and youth advocates argued that traditional PIT count strategies were failing to identify young people, leading to a consistent undercount of homeless youth in the community.

Using new approaches, San Jose completed its most recent count in 2011, identifying:

601 unaccompanied homeless youth age 24 and under, which is well over the 373 youth counted in 2009; and

Unaccompanied youth represented 15 percent of the city's total homeless population.

The City worked in partnership with nonprofit homeless research specialist Applied Survey Research (ASR) and the new strategy is outlined in the 2011 City of San Jose Homeless Census and Survey Jurisdictional report.

The National Alliance to End Homelessness recently published a brief which discusses the methodology, volunteer recruitment and training, and lessons learned.

CSH Announces 2012 PIT Trainings

PIT Count set for January 25, 2012 Webinars on January 12th and 18th

The Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH - NJ) announced two training webinars for the 2012 Point in Time (PIT) Count on Thursday, January 12, 2012 and Monday, January 18, 2012.

These trainings are designed for all of those that will be participating in the count. The webinars will provide detailed training on the new survey for 2012 including how it should be executed both on paper and entered online. The sessions will also highlight the following areas:

HUD PIT Count Guidance for 2012

Purpose of the PIT Count

How to complete a Sheltered and Unsheltered Count

Survey and Interviewing Tips

Everyone involved in the PIT Count should plan to attend one of the trainings. All are welcome to participate in the trainings and please forward the details below to anyone who may be interested in participating.
