BALITANG SHOWBIZ: Miss Sinulog in Kabankalan features 'Ahtisa Manalo' and 'Gloria Diaz' as special guest & judges to anticipate Sinulog sa Kabankalan's 50th Golden Anniversary [#FirstonTheBrightonBugle]
(Written by Andrea Davenport & Dominique Resuma Canio / Online News Correspondent of The Brighton Bugle, and Regional News Correspondent of OneNETnews)
KABANKALAN, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL -- The 50th golden anniversary of "Sinulog sa Kabankalan" will feature Negrosanons shining in localized fashion from January 9th to 18th, 2026 at the 'Kabankalan Public Plaza'. Twelve (12) participants are competing for the prestigious milestone anniversary-style title as they approach the coronation night by next week.
Ahtisa Manalo, who was the 3rd runner-up in Miss Universe 2025, along with Gloria Diaz, the 1969 Miss Universe winner, will both be attending the event as special guests and judges for "Miss Sinulog". This information was first disseminated through social media by 5K Broadcasting Network's K5 News FM at 102.9mhz on the local radio dial.
So, Fandreas… To make both sides clear, it is necessary to point out that Kabankalan was not a branch activity event related to the flagship Cebu Sinulog festival. It was however, based on the historic Ati-Atihan and Dinagyang festivals, which originated during the peak of the Martial Law era in 1976, which was way before the decades old controversial protests of the Escalante Massacre in late-September 1985.
Kabankalan and Cebu honor to tribute 'Sr. Santo Niño' as is derived in the Cebuano dialect of "sulog", meaning like a water stream, which best describes the dynamic and rhythmical move that characterizes Sinulog. The Sinulog festival became its flagship in 1980, and it is a city-wide cultural event. In this case, the "tribal" or "warrior" motif of this city is a respect for the native "Ati" people. As a traditional element, performers blacken their skin with soot, not as an expression of racial idea, but as a symbolic change to honor their ancestry and the origins of Negros soil. Both of these festivals are celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of January, a fact that makes many people see the two traditions as sister festivals.
"Miss Sinulog", the most important beauty and culture pageant in Negros Occidental, as these local contestants within the barangays of Kabankalan represent different schools, colleges and universities, where they demonstrate the pride in their cultural heritage and devotion to Sr. Santo Niño through elegance and cultural pride. It is not just an ordinary beauty contest… One is going to seek a cultural ambassador.
Participants usually enter wearing traditional dances or wearing vivid costumes that illustrate the "tribal" or "Ati" origins of the said festival. In its 50th year, the pageant has come to be known as "Race for the Golden Crown", highlighting the historical importance of the victory of its titleholder. The winning participants will be eligible to receive cash awards and have an opportunity to represent the city in various regional tourism events throughout this year. The source organizer of the event can withhold taxes to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in Binalbagan or Bacolod.
Mainstage is in readiness, the lights are on! Quad Cities' newspaper outlet (The Brighton Bugle) and the internet's Philippine public news media 'OneNETnews' will soon learn who will take home the golden crown for "Miss Sinulog" in Kabankalan on Thursday night (January 15th) at the Kabankalan Public Plaza. It is not just a pageant, it is as much a colorful tapestry of history, faith and the long-standing spirit of the Negrosanon people. Whether you are drawn by the glamorous pageantry or the profound history, this golden anniversary event showcases that tradition is always in vogue.

BALITANG REHIYONAL: Negrosanon contingents to be debut, representing 'Sinulog Festival 2025' in Cebu City [#OneNETnewsEXCLUSIVE]
(Written by Scott Denoga / News Intern of Disney XD News)
CEBU CITY, CEBU -- Cebu's very own Sinulog Festival, one of the Philippines' most colorful cultural and religious events is happening this Sunday (January 19, 2025 -- Cebu local time). Two (2) contingents from Negros Oriental will be joining the out-of-town category at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) in Osmeña Boulevard. A big deal for both of these contingent groups.
This year, the Sinulog Foundation Incorporated (SFi) announced 43 contingents joining the festival, 11 of which are out-of-town groups. Among them are Bais' Festival of Harvests (Hudyaka) and Dumaguete City's Sandurot Festival. Though the two cities have a rich culture, this would be a perfect opportunity for them to exhibit it on a much larger scale as part of the Sinulog Festival.
In case you didn't know, the Sinulog Festival is an annual event every 3rd Sunday of January in Cebu City to honor the Sr. Santo Niño (Child Jesus). The said festival features a traditional dance ritual that symbolizes the Filipino people's transition from paganism to Christianity. Participants wear colorful costumes and dance to the beat of drums, trumpets, and native gongs to create a grand spectacle.
While the Sinulog Festival has been around for a long time, in terms of showcasing regional performances, the records of the upcoming participation between Bais City and Dumaguete City are yet to be listed there, which sources told exclusively to 'OneNETnews'. So it's not clear if this is the first time for these contingents to join. But their inclusion in the 2025 lineup means the festival is getting bigger and more regions are interested in joining this cultural event.
Sinulog Festival is massively competitive and has different categories with cash prizes. While the amounts for the 2025 out-of-town contingents are yet to be announced, last year's festival in 2024 had significant prizes for the winners, ranging from PHP200,000 to PHP1M Philippine pesos (or roughly U$D3,419 to U$D17,097), which will be later awarded the next day on Monday afternoon (January 20th) at the CCSC for the final results.
The cash prizes may vary but a 20% withholding tax imposed by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) applies to prizes above PHP10,000 pesos (or U$D171). Other than financial gain for the residents of Bais City and Dumaguete City, winning those prizes will mean raising their city's double cultural profile.
'Cebu Daily News Digital' has the exclusive LIVE stream of the festivities -- from opening mass, grand parades, competitive showdowns, and a grand finale with fireworks, for those who can't make it to the event in and out of Cebu. Viewers from around the world can watch the LIVE coverage on CDN Digital's website and social media pages thru Facebook and YouTube so the celebration can reach a global audience.
But what about the weather in Cebu City? State-weather bureau 'Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration' (PAGASA) says, it will be generally fair on that day with occasional rain showers and localized thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. It is best to bring your own umbrellas rain or shine when you need to.
The participation of two at the 'Sinulog Festival 2025' is proof that the said festival is for all cultures. In preparation for showing their rich heritage, contingents are keenly awaited for both local and international audiences on this festival for they reflect its timeless spirit and significance. Good luck to both of them and Pit Senyor!

Novena to Sto. Niño (de Cebu) First Day
View On WordPress
VIVA PIT SEÑOR!
A reminder for sinulog '18. Pit Senyor Everyone 😊
Another sinulog experience! 🎉 It's my second time to witness and experience how the people really paid much respect and love to the patron of Cebu, sto. Niño. The people in the church was really overwhelming and i'm privileged enough to have celebrated the mass on sto. Niño's feast day - thanking him for all the many blessings he have bestowed upon me and my loved ones the past year. 🙏 It was a sunny bright morning when we arrived at the queen city of the south, Cebu. We went straight to church to visit the infant Jesus, lighted a candle and said our fervent prayers. Thank you for the people who took care of me when i was away from my family. And thank you babe for introducing this tradition to me. Truly a worthwhile experience! 👍
