JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA / GENERAL LUNA, SURIGAO DEL NORTE -- Nearly two months ago, a world-famous weather expert who had been mysteriously spotted from the public eye in this country for months oddly drew attention. Channel 8 News and Disney XD News tracked him down for what he publicly announced as a nationwide weather meet-up tour.
On Tuesday (March 17th, 2026), First Coast News (FCN) weather reporter and Emmy Award-winning American veteran meteorologist 'Robert Matthew Speta', founder and highly experienced indie presenter of Western Pacific Weather (WestPacWX), set out alone for an early summer adventure in the Philippines. His itinerary features stops in Metro Manila, Isabela, Cebu and Siargao, culminating in the much-anticipated Philippine Meteorological Conference (PMC) in Quezon City, Metro Manila. He constantly documents their trip through social media posts for his followers across the state, including Speta's hometown in Jacksonville.
Florida's WTLV-TV 12 NBC and WJXX-TV 25 ABC combined into a duopoly branded newsroom of First Coast News to provide local news, weather and sports for both Northeast Florida & Southeast Georgia. But historically on March 19th, days after the announcement from WestPacWX, Nexstar Media Group (NMG) closed its U$D6.2 billion (or PHP380.37 billion Philippine peso) acquisition to Tegna Incorporated. All U.S. local news stations, including FCN in Florida began replacing the end tag outros with the standard NMG local copyright slate as part of the merger.
As reported by Cord Cutter News and Deadline Hollywood, they have to undo their merger with Tegna, as it turned out partially a total prank at the end of every newscast. Nexstar still owns the said U.S. commercial broadcasters, which is likely unfair competition and a violation of antitrust laws. FCN restored their original Tegna-branded outros below the screenbug text of "A TEGNA Company" with the network callsign and continue to operate autonomously under the "First Coast News" name for the time being.
His career in meteorology began in 2005, and he launched WestPacWX in the fall of 2010. For more than two (2) decades, Speta's career has taken place globally, forecasting weather in 17 countries and across three different oceans, including the Philippines. He spent five (5) years in East Asia, working on Japanese public broadcaster 'NHK'. He covers as a field weather reporter for The Weather Channel and many others.
Seven (7) years later in March 2017, Speta was part of an Emmy-winning newscast for coverage of catastrophic flash flooding near Rochester, New York. Here at home, the defunct Cable News Network (CNN) Philippines (now 'NewsWatch Plus') interviews a year later in September 2018 for the updates of Typhoon Ompong via the defunct video calling platform 'Skype'.
The trek to the tropics began Wednesday night (March 18th), as Speta departed Jacksonville for the Philippines. The journey faced an unexpected hurdle at Denver International Airport (DIA), where a terminal-wide power outage stalled layover traffic. Disney XD News confirmed the scoop that the state utility provider "Xcel Energy" swiftly responded to the outage, restoring power within roughly 90 minutes and allowing flights to resume, leaving Speta oddly stranded due to the delay.
Here at home for Siargao Electric Cooperative (SIARELCO), there was also an unexpected power interruption Tuesday night at 6:16pm. The root cause is yet to be verified by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), affecting the entire Siargao and Bucas Grande islands. Power has now resumed four (4) hours later.
Despite the delay, Speta touched down at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal in Manila, four hours behind schedule at 1:30am (March 19th). His first order of business was the Philippine Meteorological Conference (PMC) at the Luxent Hotel in 'Timog Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City' where he served as an emcee and speaker on March 24th and 25th. While there, he joined with former PAGASA specialist and ABS-CBN resident meteorologist 'John Ariel Rojas' to discuss the future of national and regional forecasting.
Between sessions, Speta engaged with the public at a massive "Meet and Greet" at ShoeMart Mall of Asia by the Bay on March 20th, even finding time to sample local delicacies like halo-halo. His "side quest" took him north to Isabela on March 21st, witnessing agricultural drone technology in Reina Mercedes before meeting followers at SM Cauayan's Cabalen Buffet Restaurant.
Returning to the capital on March 26th, he visited the national weather office of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to inspect the latest cyclone-tracking tech and later toured Alto Broadcasting System - Chronicle Broadcasting Network (ABS-CBN)'s Studio 7 following an afternoon newscast of TV Patrol Express with Jeff Corullo Canoy and Denice Irene Dinsay.
The tour then shifted to the Visayas. While viral sensation "iShowSpeed" (real name 'Darren Jason Watkins Jr.') from Ohio dominated Cebu's local FM station visit in late-September 2024, Speta brought a different kind of "On The Spot" energy at lunchtime to DYUR-FM 105.1mhz's Tops Media Center on Friday morning (March 27th).
DJ Langganeda (or 'Neda Aviñante-Esguerra) of DYWF-FM 93.1mhz's Favorite Music Radio intentionally refused to feature either Speed or Speta. Interviewed by Kuya Magik, he broke down the science of recent typhoons for the local community. Following a stop at the museum of Profoods Corporation in Mandaue and a visit to the Doppler radar at PAGASA Mactan, Speta caught a Saturday flight to Siargao Island.
On March 29th, he self-organized an in-person event of "Sunday Funday" at the Siargao Wakepark in 'Barangay Consuelo, General Luna, Surigao del Norte' since the island went under long recovery following the disastrous Typhoon Odette in early mid-December 2021. To keep up with such a demanding schedule, Speta maintains his regimen as a marathon runner, a hobby that reflects the stamina behind his professional career for two decades.
By Tuesday afternoon (March 31st), Robert Speta left behind an inspired group of weather fans, bluer skies, and a piece of memorabilia for the United States. This national meet-up tour has been not only a vacation; it was a masterclass in reporting on weather independently. In the hi-tech lobbies of PAGASA, as well as the wind-swept lakes of Siargao, the legacy of Western Pacific Weather by Speta serves as testimony to the fact that meteorology is a universal language of safety and community.
He will land back at the First Coast News weather desk in Jacksonville just in time to have a blessed Good Friday (April 3rd). While he might miss the Philippines with a Jollibee store in two locations in Florida, which "Hailey's On It!" brought you our opening theme in Orlando, and the warmth of the Filipino people, his commitment to bringing the First Coast the most accurate local weather remains unchanged.
The history of Robert Speta and Western Pacific Weather is one of the manifestations of the strength of independent expertise. WestPacWX has not only been a hobby or even a side project, but it has also been a lifeline to mariners, farmers and families around the Pacific basin who need a voice they can count on when the sky turns gray. The work of translating complex weather data into clear, actionable guidance has saved lives not only on the First Coast of Florida but also on the sexiest shores of Siargao.
His journey proves that while technology and companies may change, it's the unwavering commitment of indie weather experts that truly anchors Filipino communities as we welcome Speta into our beautiful summer island.
Now, for Channel 8 News's First Warning Weather:
When you are in the capital to drive the Visita Iglesia, then be ready to sweat up everyone! Mega Manila is expected to live up to its reputation as a "summer furnace". A scorching sun with temperatures that reach a burning 33 to 34 degrees Celsius. The climate feels like 38 with humidity being the highest, and I best advise you to remain hydrated and prefer wearing light and breathable garments when going out there.
And no, my hideous beach s*x in Siargao is not on my hideously perverse list outside its cable cartoon show, which I have to respectfully abstain to on account of Roman Catholics back home in Oceanside and Orlando. For those observing the Stations of the Cross (SOTC) or Via Crucis, it is advisable to participate either early in the morning or at 5pm to minimize exposure to intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation during peak daylight hours.
The heat of the Cagayan Valley is well known to be blazing in the north, but Isabela province does offer a slightly cooler and breezier atmosphere this weekend as it holds steady between 30 and 31 degrees Celsius. Expect breezy weather and a mixed amount of cloud cover (between 67 and 70 percent) to infuse some relief during outdoor processions.
The classic summer heat is mingling with a couple of Easter surprises, which are afflicting the Queen City of the South. The weather conditions will see highs of 32 degrees Celsius at Metro Cebu; however, the weather is subject to any observance of the sky. It has been suggested that there will be a probability of 40 to 45 percent of passing showers or afternoon thunderstorms on Good Friday and Black Saturday.
And for those who made it to the surfing capital, the real prank might just be finding a spot on the beach. Cool, undiluted island summer. The temperatures in Siargao will remain around 30 degrees Celsius with very low rainfall. There will be crystal-clear waters and jaw-dropping scenery, but the level of humidity will be high. The island is said to be at full capacity, so maybe it is the only thing that has been playing nice, that being the weather.
Whether you are looking in a silent chapel or catching a wave, be watchful of any illegal pranksters lurking about to steal your Easter eggs! Well, as regards Speta himself, he is aware that the prophecy will not play unnecessary tricks for now.
That concludes your local weekend weather. Wishing you safe travels and a joyful Easter celebration on Holy Pranked Day.
