2021 Top Games of the Week: Week 8

We don’t have any real heavyweight fights, but plenty of intrigue flying around some division and conference races.

The Top Ten Games of the Week

10. Tennessee 4-3 (2-2) at #4 Alabama 6-1 (3-1)

Alabama never loses this game, but the Tide look a little vulnerable now so let’s keep one eye on it.

9. South Carolina 5-1 (2-1) at #17 Texas A&M 5-2 (2-2)

This game likely won’t end up being important to either division race but nothing has been decided in the SEC West so far so all eyes are on A&M to keep up a pursuit of Alabama.

8. USC 3-3 (2-3) at #13 Notre Dame 5-1

Much like the Third (Fourth) Saturday in October Game, this stellar rivalry has seen better incarnations. Still, this is the best inter-regional rivalry in the nation and it has some intrigue. Notre Dame is a step slower than their Playoff incarnations of the past few years and have flirted with disaster several times this year. USC, of course, is already on an interim head coach following the dismissal of Clay Helton.

7. #16 Wake Forest 6-0 (4-0) at Army 4-2

Wake Forest is halfway through an undefeated season. You have to love it. Army is always an upset threat with their triple option. Will Wake’s streak continue?

6. #14 Coastal Carolina 6-0 (2-0) at Appalachian State 4-2 (1-1)

The Sun Belt’s new golden child faces off against the older golden child. Coastal Carolina continues to roll through the season undefeated and are going to press a claim on a New Year’s Bowl until they’re defeated. Appalachian State is still a strong presence in the Sun Belt even if they haven’t been quite as strong in the past few years. The Mountaineers, of course, get up for big games.

5. LSU 4-3 (2-2) at #12 Ole Miss 5-1 (2-1)

Is the Magnolia Bowl usually played this early? Maybe the season is just going by faster than I think. Either way isn’t this a strange sight? Ed Orgeron is a lame duck on the sidelines and an underdog to an Ole Miss team that LSU usually dominates.

4. Utah 4-2 (3-0) at Oregon State 4-2 (2-1)

I’m as shocked as anyone that this game features two teams on tops of their respective divisions. Utah has been playing solid ball of late and now holds sole possession of the PAC-12 South. Oregon State has continued to toil in obscurity despite slowly improving in the past several years. The Beavers have a great chance to notch a showcase win in Corvallis this year.

3. #8 Oklahoma State 6-0 (3-0) at Iowa State 4-2 (2-1)

Undefeated Oklahoma State travels to Ames on the 10th anniversary of their heartbreaking overtime loss that cost the Cowboys a shot at the national championship. I’m sure they won’t make the same mistake twice. Man, and if Iowa State held up their end of the bargain this could’ve been a very highly ranked game.

2. Clemson 4-2 (3-1) at #23 Pittsburgh 5-1 (2-0)

If Pitt wins this game they could absolutely run the table and finish the year 11-1 with a Coastal Championship. The Panthers have already beaten the only real contender in the division and don’t have a ton of good teams left on the schedule.

1. #10 Oregon 5-1 (2-1) at UCLA 5-2 (3-1)

This game looked a lot more exciting 3 weeks ago before Oregon and UCLA took a couple of losses. Still, the counter programming isn’t too strong so this game stays on the top of the pile this week. The Ducks are the only team in the PAC-12 with only one loss left and are desperate to rejoin the Playoff conversation. Of course they’ll have to win out to even come close, and a familiar face in Chip Kelly is going to try to keep them back.

5 G5 Games of the Week

5. Memphis 4-3 (1-2) at UCF 4-3 (1-2)

Get your licks in now, Memphis.

4. Northern Illinois 5-2 (3-0) at Central Michigan 4-3 (2-1)

Northern Illinois has suddenly surged back into MAC power status. Can the Huskies maintain the momentum and reclaim the West title that they dominated so much in the early 2010′s.

3. Nevada 5-1 (2-0) at Fresno State 5-2 (2-1)

The West Division is looking serious. These two teams might be the best in the division despite an undefeated San Diego State squad.

2. Colorado State 3-3 (2-0) at Utah State 4-2 (2-1)

With Boise State having an off year the Mountain Division is wide open. Both Colorado State and Utah State have been having rebound seasons. The winner will control their destiny in the conference race.

1. #22 San Diego State 6-0 (2-0) at Air Force 6-1 (3-1)

The Mountain West is once again reasserting itself as the second strongest G5 conference. San Diego State is (rather luckily) undefeated and face stiff competition against one of the Mountain Division’s strongest programs at the moment.

FCS Games of the Week

5. Harvard 5-0 (2-0) at #22 Princeton 5-0 (2-0)

It’s the 113th meeting between these old Ivy League rivals. Both Harvard and Princeton are brining undefeated records into the game for the first time since 2006.

4. #20 Northern Iowa 3-3 (1-2) at #6 South Dakota State 5-1 (2-1)

3. #17 Missouri State 4-2 (3-1) at #3 North Dakota State 6-0 (3-0)

The MVFC gives us two ranked vs ranked matchups. The only thing is that the higher ranked teams will almost certainly win.

2. #18 Rhode Island 5-1 (3-1) at #5 Villanova 5-1 (3-0)

1. #7 James Madison 5-1 (3-1) at #23 Delaware 3-3 (2-2)

The CAA also gives us two ranked vs ranked game. The higher ranked teams will probably also win.
