🎯 Google sues ex-engineer in Texas over leaked Pixel chip secrets
Google has filed a lawsuit against a former engineer in a Texas federal court, accusing him of stealing trade secrets related to its chip designs and sharing them online. The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday, alleges that Harshit Roy boasted about his control over the stolen information in social media posts, where he tagged competitors and made threatening remarks toward the company. Statements included phrases like "I need to take unethical means to get what I am entitled to" and "remember that empires fall and so will you."
When contacted on Wednesday, Roy did not respond to requests for comment. Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda stated, "Following an investigation, we discovered that this former employee had taken numerous confidential documents. We are taking legal action due to repeated and unauthorized disclosures of sensitive company information. Such behavior is unacceptable."
Roy, who joined Google in 2020 to work on chip development for Pixel devices, resigned in February. He later relocated from Bangalore, India, to the U.S. in August to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin. According to the lawsuit, Roy began sharing Google's confidential information on social media in August, including internal documents with specifications for Pixel processing chips. He also posted comments such as "don't expect me to adhere to any confidentiality agreement."
Despite Google's takedown requests, Roy allegedly continued sharing trade secrets on platforms like X and LinkedIn. The complaint claims he even tagged companies like Apple and Qualcomm to amplify the impact of his disclosures. Additionally, Google stated that confidential details leaked by Roy have been cited in media reports about its devices.
