psa about sims with disabilities
THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION AND I WILL ONLY BE TALKING ABOUT PHYSICAL DISABILITIES SINCE THAT IS WHAT I AM MOST EXPERIENCED WITH
this is more so of a rant than a psa anyway i am a disabled simmer, i’ve been in a wheelchair all my life. once i heard eaxis might be adding disabilities, i’ve been curious as to how that would be implemented. (@noncommittaltrait and i have had plenty of conversations about it, mainly joking about what packs would be released before disabilities, which have quote “been at the top of our [eaxis’s] list for awhile now” end quote)
i don’t see a lot of disabled gameplay on my dash. i’m not assuming anyone’s opinions on disabled people here. the only time i see wheelchairs/crutches/prosthetics/etc being used are in hospital settings or a tragic element to a story, which is naming disability as a burden or a condition that can be magically cured.
word choice matters. i saw a posepack pertaining to wheelchair poses and the description was something along the lines of “this posepack is to bring to light the struggles of being in a wheelchair.” the word ‘struggles’ is not being inclusive. it’s rude to assume everybody with a disability struggles. most of us are fine: we live our lives every day just like you able-bodies do. granted we live differently than you, but we’re living regardless. we have hobbies, interests, goals, dreams, just like you.
if you plan on using sims with disabilities, whether it be creating objects or poses or just doing research, PLEASE for the love of all that is holy consult friendly neighborhood google to get accuracies corrected. i’ve seen so many inaccuracies regarding wheelchair objects and their lack of proper anatomy that it just grinds my gears. there are different kinds of wheelchairs out there, types you wouldn’t think would be used for every day situations or through athletics. better yet, reach out to disabled simmers, myself included. i guarantee you we would be delighted to help you.
are these pieces of cc better than nothing? absolutely. will we ever get an official disability update? honestly idk given ea’s track record with promises.
