Pizza Lady: The Ordinary Superhero No one Ever Talks About
Friday, October 23rd 2018
The Thin Crust Crusaider
By Melanie
They say triangles are the strongest shape
They say justice is best served cold
They say nothing brings together people better than food
They say a lot of things these people
But I've decided that when they talk about these three things they must be talking about Pizza. Pizza, and Pizza Lady: the hero who brings Justice with a slice.
Because who would want their pizza to be anything but the strongest possible shape engineering can provide?
Is there anyone who can say they haven't thoroughly enjoyed at least one slice of cold pizza?
And lastly, most importantly, they are not wrong, Pizza does bring people together even in the dead of night
Rolling through the cold, gloomy night of my proverbial Gotham City
I hear many sounds
I hear the roar of passing cars, the screech of police sirens when finally I hear the worst sound of all
I hear a pop, and the grinding of metal
Looking down in horror I see my wheelchair, crippled itself thanks to a single missing screw.
All hope is lost
I'll never find the screw
That is until I look to the sky and see a sight I haven't seen in a long time
I see, the Pizza Signal!
Justice is about to be served in 30 minutes or less!
When I started this blog I did so hoping to capture many of the moments and specifically the positives that can come with having a disability. Though I know it's true that there exists many people in the world who would simply help regardless of someone's disability; I am also keenly aware that my disability can sometimes as lead me to experience random acts of kindness. Most often this comes from the kindness of strangers. Some of these strangers, I get to thank, and some, like pizza lady I can't possibly thank enough.
Unlike a lot of poems on this blog, part of this poem is completely non - fiction. This past Wednesday I was coming home from a night class. It was cold, it was dark, it was windy it had all the makings of a night that would have been the perfect setting for a crime in a superhero movie. Instead, what transpired was exactly as it says. While moving to roll down the curb cut in the sidewalk my wheelchair suddenly stopped moving. I had indeed lost a tiny, 2 cm, black screw in the middle of the night.
After looking around a while I became pretty defeated. The screw was gone, and so by extension I was screwed. My wheelchair was going to have to limp home with me until I could find a replacement. Instead of attempting that feat which would have taken hours in the cold; I staggered into a nearby pizza joint hoping they could help at the very least get me a cab.
That, is not what happened. Instead, this woman appeared as I'm inside the pizza joint, produced a ramp so that I could get inside, and then proceeded to tell me she was going to find the screw in question. I thanked her for her generosity, and begin making arrangements to call the cab, but truthfully had little hope that she would find anything. So, I was more than a little surprised when two minutes later Pizza Lady came back inside with the offending screw! She then proceeded to produce an allen key set, and put the screw back where it belongs in my wheelchair.
Finally, as if all of this wasn't heroic enough Pizza Lady insisted on feeding me a slice of pizza on the house. It's people like her that are the reason my blog exists because, if I do nothing else then to record the stories of kindness of those I meet in the form of poetry for the rest of my life and I feel I have done something meaningful. To Pizza Lady her small acts of kindness may have seemed like nothing but to me they were everything, so much so they were worthy of this blog post.
Thank you Pizza Lady! This poem is for you. I hope we meet again soon. And I hope you never lose your heroic zest for doing the right thing. Thank you.
Give me all the PIZZA and I will rock your world
i listen to classic fm a lot, especially when smooth classics with margherita taylor is on in the evenings. my little cousin stayed with us for a few days last week and today i got a message from my aunt saying he insists on listening to "that nice music with the pizza lady" everyday before bed
I'm just a girl; standing in front of a salad, asking it to be a pizza.
I feel like I have a second stomach that is only triggered whenever there's pizza close by.
