Steve and Eddie have different ideas of what ‘their’ song is. Steve insists it’s Hungry Eyes by Eric Carmen because it was playing during their first date (they also don’t agree on what their first date was, but either way Eddie doesn’t want that song, even if he can admit it might be appropriate for them) but Eddie insists it’s The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden because it was playing when they first kissed. (Steve can admit the sentiment is sweet but “the lyrics aren’t romantic, Eddie!!” “It’s not about the lyrics! It’s about the memory!” “It’s about, like, Satan!” “So?”)

(On the other hand, Steve and Robin know their song is Total Eclipse of the Heart, no debate)

Eddie drops by Steve’s when Steve’s washing his car and he doesn’t get a chance to say anything before he just…short circuits. Because Steve’s wearing this ratty old gray sweatshirt that’s got all these holes in it and the collar is all stretched out so it shows a lot of collarbone, and it’s wet in some parts so it’s clinging a little, and the only other thing he’s wearing is a pair of cut-offs that show more of Steve’s legs than Eddie has ever seen

It takes him a good twenty minutes to function again, and Steve is kind of freaking out and touching Eddie’s face and shoulders, trying to get through to him, which only makes it worse, and the first word he manages to say is “thighs”, and Steve is relieved but confused, and Eddie clean forgets what he came over for, but it doesn’t matter because thinks he might be dead, anyway

Steve being indignant over the girls in Hawkins not being interested in Eddie and Eddie's like I mean, it's fine, I'm gay, I'm not interested in them, and Steve's like that's not the point! You're hot! What's wrong with them?

Eddie calls Steve up and he’s like “Steve! I need you to come over ASAP! I’m in a real pickle!” So, Steve goes over and finds Eddie in a giant pickle costume, laughing his ass off

Steve gets one of those 'I'm not gay but my boyfriend is' shirts and he's like 'but, see, it's not even a joke because I'm NOT gay' and he thinks it's so funny and Eddie's like 'I'm getting an "I'm not a dork but my boyfriend is" shirt printed' and Steve says 'Well, that one would be *wrong*...unless I was also wearing it' and Eddie just sighs, long suffering, while Steve grins roguishly, still proudly wearing his shirt

Steve likes to think he’s the responsible one, that he’s totally over all that teenage stuff, he’s a man now, he’s Seen Things! But! It would be so easy for Eddie to talk him into doing dumb shit. So easy

Going to turn this into a fic at some point but: Steve starts getting weird leading up to his first anniversary with Eddie. He's distant one moment, then all over Eddie even more than usual the next. It takes Eddie a little while to notice and then, when he does, and he looks at the calendar, the dots start connecting. It's been nearly a year since they got together and Steve is acting weird. That can’t be good. He asks Dustin and Robin and some of the others if they've noticed Steve being weird lately, but no one has. It's just with Eddie.

The only conclusion Eddie can come to is that Steve is having second thoughts about them and if he is then...Steve can tell him himself, damn it!

Only, Eddie doesn't want to ask because he's not sure he wants to know. But then not knowing is worse. So, he asks. But he doesn't ask Steve because he's not that brave. He talks to Robin. He tells her what's been happening and how their anniversary is coming up and it takes Robin a minute to make the connection but then she says, "You know that he and Nance broke up just before they officially got to a year," and then the dots really connect. For real this time. And Eddie feels like kind of an asshole for thinking...

He thanks Robin and he doesn't say anything to Steve but he's extra affectionate, trying to reassure Steve without saying anything as their anniversary draws closer. He’s not sure it works but Steve seems a little more at ease.

And when the clock ticks over to one minute past midnight on their anniversary, Eddie wakes Steve up. Steve is grumpy at first, and then worried that something's wrong, until Eddie says, "Happy anniversary."

Steve squints. "Huh?"

"It's officially one year since we got together." Eddie smiles softly. "We made it."

Steve smiles back and says, "You couldn't have told me in the morning?" even as he reaches for Eddie.

“Couldn’t wait,” Eddie says and kisses Steve and holds him tight.

And Eddie does the same thing every year for many many years to come.

Eddie is forever grumbling about “losing” his shirts, storming out of their room and flopping dramatically on the couch, declaring his favorite shirt is gone forever, it was there one minute and now it’s just gone. Gone gone gone!

And Steve will sigh and say it can’t be lost, shirts don’t just get up and walk out and Eddie will say this one did! all but harrumphing. So Steve will go in their room, look through the same pile of shirts Eddie looked through a moment ago, and come back out, holding it up, saying “this shirt?”

And Eddie will say it wasn’t there when he looked and they’re all black, it was camouflaged, and take the shirt half-annoyed, half-sheepish and murmur something about how there’s definitely a shirt stealing gremlin living in their walls that takes Eddie’s shirts then puts them back for Steve to find and make Eddie look like an idiot

And Steve will roll his eyes and try not to smile knowing it will happen again and again. And some days he finds it amusing, others annoying, but it’s all part of living together
