Yesterday, I felt like a real fan of my hometown.

I found the Stan square so beautiful that I took a photo of it, found myself in a souvenir store and bought a packet of bergamots for my grandmother.

Nancy Horizontal

If you like wide expanses in towns, Nancy's got you covered. Of course, there's Place Stanislas, named after the King of Poland and ally of French King Louis XV. Following a continent-wide war in 1735, Stanislas became Duke of Lorraine, and ordered the construction of this large square and buildings around it. The result is a concentrate of 18th-century style.

While it is the most famous, Place Stanislas is not the largest square in Nancy. Seen below, Place de la Carrière, which is adjacent to Place Stanislas via the Héré Arch seen in the photo above, is bigger, and the combination of Cours Léopold and Place Carnot is just enormous.

Smaller, Place Charles III, named after another Duke of Lorraine, has a remarkable baroque church, Saint-Sébastien, on it. My impression was that these places have to be really tough in summer - there's not much shade, it's very mineral and very bright.

Moving on North from Place de la Carrière is the old town of Nancy, and the part I found the most charming. At the end of Grande Rue is the medieval gate Porte de la Craffe, bearing the Lorraine Cross with two horizontal bars.
