Responsible Packaging Comes In Small Sizes Too

Single-serve portions which come in a NESCAFÉ sachet are convenient and efficient, and now you can rest assured that they are a responsible package solution, thanks to the hard work of Nestlé engineers.

The challenge

Single-serve portions represented a tough challenge for us in our mission to create more responsible packaging. Originally, these single-serve portions were ravioli-shaped sachets which used a lot of material for the amount of coffee they actually contained. We were convinced there must be a more efficient alternative.

What we did

Nestle invented the stick shaped pack – which uses much less material than the previous ravioli shaped sachet. Today more than 85% of single-serve portions of sugar are served in these stick packs. While the solution worked well for sugar, we still had work to do to adapt this to for NESCAFÉ which requires much more robust packaging to protect it from moisture and oxygen. Through research and development, we produced stick packs for our single-serve NESCAFÉ that would guarantee it remains as good as the day it was packed, as well as using 27% less material.

The results

Considering the 1.1 billion single-serve portions which were produced for Europe alone in 2007, that 27% reduction in material goes a long way. In fact it represents a saving of nearly 200 tonnes of packaging material, 1,000 tonnes less carbon dioxide produced (equivalent to the output of 270 cars driven for a year), 30,000 m3 of water saved, (the amount used by 400 people in a year). The energy saved has been calculated to be around 20,000 gigajoules – going a long way towards responsible production.
