Nicktoons with Eric: Planet Sheen
Being the third spin-off of a Nicktoon, Planet Sheen is by far the worst of the three. Okay, it at least ran for more than four episodes, but Planet Sheen has such mind boggling changes from its procedure that there's no way I can ignore it. I can even safely say that it's one of the worst Nicktoons.
One of the main problems with Planet Sheen is that it doesn't even feel like a spin-off of The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. Hell, the main character in Planet Sheen doesn't even feel like the Sheen we saw in Jimmy Neutron. At least with All Grown Up it still sort of felt like Rugrats. In this series, we get predictable and unfunny jokes of the lowest common denominator, unlikable characters, and some horrible CGI. Instead of repeating how bad it is, I'll show you why.
I've seen quite a few episodes, but I might as well talk about the first episode, because that's where many problems originated from. In the pilot episode of Planet Sheen, Sheen proceeds to enter Jimmy's laboratory when he's not home. Uh, what about the DNA check? Every time Jimmy entered the lab, he would pull out a strand of hair to be identified. Why can Sheen simply walk in? Justified, the door may have been cracked and I just didn't catch it, but why would Jimmy leave the door opened in the first place? I digress. Sheen enters looking for his "Ultra Lord goes boom boom" trading card. Get it? It's a potty joke; Stay classy. Anyway, Sheen notices a sheet with a note on it that says, "Sheen, do not look under this blanket! J.N.," so Sheen proceeds to take off the sheet to reveal another note telling Sheen to- Yeah, I'm sure you know where this is going. Sheen ignores the note, the rocket takes off, and the show's premise kicks in. The rocket lands on a planet named Zeenu, but Sheen's too occupied with using the bathroom to notice all of the aliens around him. How much toilet humor can you fit into five minutes? So Sheen meets a talking monkey named Mr. Nesmith, a small emperor named... Emperor, a fangirl who is the daughter of Emperor named Princess OomLaa, and a villain named Dorkus.
I think the main problem of Planet Sheen is that it completely exaggerates Sheen's personality. In Jimmy Neutron, Sheen was a bit of a ditz with a quirky personality, but in Planet Sheen he's just plainly a moron that's a little too weird. And yeah, that isn't a likable character. If you're going to have an odd or dimwitted character, you have to have a balance. Planet Sheen seems to cram a little too much of these traits into on character. For the other characters, I suppose they're alright, but they really aren't that fun or humorous enough. Oh yeah, did I neglect to mention that there's an alien named Doppy who looks exactly like Carl, even being voiced by Rob Paulsen? Why didn't they just make Carl get caught up with Sheen in the trip to Zeenu? What was the point of having an entirely new character? I feel if the show starred Carl and Sheen, it would be a bit more enjoyable. The one character I will say I like is Pinter, Dorkus's minion. He's actually a pretty likable character, though he's not that funny.
The humor is another major problem. As you may have noticed, Planet Sheen relies heavily on toilet humor. I have no problem with this type of comedy, but again, there needs to be a balance. I even saw one episode where Sheen had a bowl of peanuts, and as everyone began eating them, he stated that he made them combining, "nuts and..." cue everyone spitting out the mixture for comical effect. That pun such an easy target and it's not even in good taste. Put some effort in, writers. There was one joke I laughed in the pilot, but seeing how I've watched several episodes, that isn't good enough. The CGI was pretty awful too. Seeing how DNA Productions shut down in 2006, Planet Sheen was produced by a new animation company, but the designs were ugly and just pretty flimsy.
So what was creator John A. Davis thinking when he made this show? Not only does it have a large set of flaws, but why does Planet Sheen even include Sheen? Besides that character (and Doppy, I guess), there is practically no connection between this and Jimmy Neutron. The old characters are barely mentioned, the humor is less sophisticated, and is Ultra Lord even mentioned that much? Overall, Planet Sheen is a huge failure.
Thankfully, I think we're finally finished with the biggest misses in Nicktoon history.
