(See Instagram for closeups) I got my seed nerd on with @hudsonvalleyseedco and @experimentalfarmnetwork constructing this map that traces the global journeys of 15 heirloom plant varieties. From each seed packet a string visits the place where thousands of years ago people domesticated the plant species from its wild relatives (this is called the center of genetic diversity); then travels to where it was more recently developed into its current form as a unique variety; and then to Philadelphia where the strings spiral together as the seed packets wait for new homes at the #philadelphiaflowershow. The map is a reminder that our plates of food represent constant migration, sometimes by choice, but also often under harsh and constrained conditions.
