The species Colchicum speciosum grows wild in northern Turkey, Iran and Russia. Robert Backhouse of Sutton Court, Herefordshire, bred a series of cultivars named after renowned Victorians, which included the deep-pink Colchicum speciosum 'Huxley'. This cultivar was part of the Colchicum trial at the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Hyde Hall, Essex, UK.

Originally found in the wild in Greece Colchicum ‘Spartacus’ has bright, pink flowers with white centres that appear in compact bunches throughout September. This cultivar was part of the Colchicum trial at the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Hyde Hall, Essex, UK.
