So yeah, Dino-Riders is back, at least as an exclusive set from Entertainment Earth. 

This is wild.

Dino-Riders is one of those lines that was bound to grab me as a kid. Aliens fighting on laser-mounted dinosaurs. The plot is... well, not simple, but familiar, because its basically the plot from Transformers mixed with a New Age pamphlet about Lemuria.

An alien overlord chases freedom loving rebels to Earth, only here when the ships crash in dinosaur times, the aliens onboard decide to use dinosaurs as war mounts rather than sleeping until modern day to become friends and foes of children everywhere.The heroic, human-looking Valorians were teleapths who befriended the dinosaurs, while the evil anaimal-like Rulons used their mind-control “Brain box” technology to enslave the dinosaurs.

More thoughts below the fold, but TLDR:  All in all, I’m stoked and hope this isn’t the only dip into Dino-Riders or remaking 80s toy properties as old school Army Men I see from Mattel and/or EE.

The EE set reinvents the original figures in the classic army man style, going so far as to replicate classic army men poses:

Needless to say, I’m stoked.

The set also launches with new versions of the two big boys from the line, the Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Diplodocus, along with a bunch of other iconic sets.

The sculpt design for the dinos is a sort of “Halfway modern” take. Horizontal body plan for the T-Rex, I’ve seen far, far worse sauropods, quadropedal parasaurolophus, etc, but with a lot of exaggerated, toyetic approaches like the Deinonychus.

All in all, I’m stoked and hope this isn’t the only dip into Dino-Riders or remaking 80s toy properties as old school Army Men I see from Mattel and/or EE.
