Consumers now ask where the material comes from, how it's made, and where it ends up. And that shift has sparked one of the most urgent debates in our space: biodegradable vs plastic.
Let’s be honest, plastic isn’t going away overnight. It’s cheap, durable, familiar. For decades, it gave brands a convenient, scalable way to package everything from lotions to supplements. But the environmental cost is clearer than ever. Microplastics, marine waste, long degradation timelines—these aren’t abstract issues. They’re visible. Tangible. And for many consumers, unacceptable.
Biodegradable packaging, on the other hand, sounds ideal. It breaks down. It feels better. It says, "We care." But it’s not always as simple as it seems. Some biodegradable materials need industrial composting facilities to degrade properly. Others may not protect sensitive products as effectively—humidity, shelf-life, product integrity all come into play.
We had an experience with one of our wellness brands under Go Global International ApS. They switched to a starch-based biopolymer for their supplement sachets. Visually and ethically, it was a win. But after a few months, customer complaints started coming in. In warmer climates, the sachets softened or warped. Not unusable, but not ideal either. The lesson? Innovation needs testing. A great idea must also perform under pressure.
It’s easy to treat biodegradable as inherently better. But better for what? For image? Perhaps. For the environment? Often, yes. But better for protecting moisture-sensitive capsules over long transport routes? That depends.
At Vave Pharma, we experimented with hybrid models—biodegradable outer boxes and protective inner liners made from minimal plastic. It’s a compromise, but one that balances user experience, sustainability, and logistics. These are trade-offs we all have to make. There’s rarely a perfect answer. Just a better choice for a given moment.
Some regulations also complicate the picture. In the EU, any packaging that comes into contact with food or ingestibles must meet specific safety standards. That narrows the list of usable materials. And in countries like France and Germany, new packaging laws mandate recyclability rates and labeling clarity. If a biodegradable product ends up in the wrong waste stream, it might do more harm than good.
This is where innovation gets real. It's not just about inventing new materials. It's about designing systems. Packaging isn’t just a box. It’s a message. It tells a consumer who you are. What you value. Where you’re going.

This past year, we consulted on a project involving herbal nasal inhalers packaged in bamboo tubes. A beautiful idea, natural and tactile. But during testing, the tubes split under pressure at higher altitudes. A problem if you're shipping internationally. Eventually, we found a heat-treated, laminated bamboo blend that worked. It delayed launch. But it also protected the product’s promise.
The point is: sustainable packaging requires iteration. It needs patience. And yes, it costs more upfront. But there’s also long-term equity in doing it right. The brands that survive the next decade will be the ones that adapt without losing sight of what they stand for.

IIT Madras Creates Eco-Friendly Packaging from Crop and Paper Waste
In a breakthrough for sustainable packaging, researchers at IIT Madras have developed a biodegradable material made from fungi grown on crop and paper waste, offering a potential alternative to plastic foams like EPS and EPE.
The innovation, led by Dr. Lakshminath Kundanati of the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, uses fungi such as Ganoderma lucidum and Pleurotus ostreatus, grown on cardboard, sawdust, hay, and paper waste. The result is a lightweight, strong, and compostable packaging material, ideal for replacing conventional plastic-based packaging.
“India generates over 350 million tonnes of agricultural waste and 4 million tonnes of plastic waste annually. This innovation tackles both problems by repurposing waste into value,” said Dr. Kundanati.
High Strength, Biodegradable & Scalable Ganoderma on cardboard demonstrated 10x higher compressive strength than EPS.
Water resistance and full compostability make it suitable for packaging and insulation use.
NatureWrks Technologies, a startup by the research team, aims to commercialize the material and create income opportunities for rural farmers by utilizing farm-level waste.
The study was published in Bioresource Technology Reports (June 2025) and is seen as a step toward circular economy practices in India, where waste is repurposed into valuable, eco-friendly products.
