I feel like the problem is that "just make a Star Fox game" is part of why people didn't like Zero. The gyro stuff was half of it, but the other half was 'haah waaw it's more of the same'. If you ask me, they need to just drop the on-rails junk (because that style of gameplay is niche and barely seen anymore, and god knows it's holding the series back) and just focus entirely on all-range mode and more detailed missions, even keep the walker and tank maybe. Star Fox: Rogue Squadron that shit.
But that’s the thing, the on rails gameplay worked fine on a normal controller. Star Fox Zero was another game in a long line of “let’s take something that already works and see if we can stick a gimmick in there somewhere.”
It was the Star Fox equivalent of, like, Wario: Master of Disguise. Master of Disguise should be just another Wario Land game, but they add in this touch screen thing where you draw on Wario to make him change costumes.
It sucks. The concessions made to the controls to enable that kind of system ruin the game. You have to have one hand on the d-pad and one hand on the touch screen, you can’t grip the DS firmly. The touch screen gestures don’t always work right. They took a normal game and thought that sticking something dumb like touch screen controls in to it would make it better than just a menu or something. It did not.
Or what about the DS Zeldas? Those games are full of touch screen stuff, too, and at best they’re “fine.” They don’t get in the way. But I’m not over here wishing Breath of the Wild had touch screen controls, now am I? They didn’t really improve anything. They just added a gimmick.
The deck was stacked against Star Fox Zero. People knew Nintendo was known for this stuff, and rarely did it make games meaningfully better. Instead of finding meaningful ways of expanding or enhancing what people liked about the Star Fox franchise, all they did was focus on the gimmick.
Nintendo constantly lives in the shadow of what Super Mario 64 did for analog character control and they have yet to find anything as universally defining as that.
A good video game is still a good video game. Star Fox Zero may have been “more of the same,” but it was the first new Star Fox game in like a decade. And how long has it been since Star Fox 64? We’re coming up on a quarter of a century.
I think there’s room for more of the same when it’s been that long. What was once good will still be good, for the most part. Mechanics don’t really age; it’s the way you use them that does.
“Focusing entirely on all-range mode” is literally Star Fox Assault. There was like, two rail shooter levels in that game. Everything else was some variant of All-Range Mode.
You’re literally having a “Sonic can’t work in 3D!” argument with me right now and I don’t think that, or what you’re saying about Star Fox is true at all. It’s all a matter of doing it right, which Nintendo has not done in an extremely long time.

Do you think a Sonic game created by Platinum could be fun?
Almost certainly. I’m a big fan of Platinum in general and their games are usually super fast paced so I think they have a lot of potential if they were given the rights to make a Sonic game. Maybe a game where you take the combat elements from Heroes or Unleashed and flesh that out DMC/Bayonetta style.

did platinum say anything about porting to current gen consoles because thatd be cool
