First Argument

Premise 1: being a fish is an altered state of being Premise 2: being drunk is an altered state of being Premise 3: these are roughly equatable

Conclusion: Socrates would enjoy it if Alcibiades was a fish.

Evidence: Symposium 212D, Alcibiades enters drunk out of his mind. Nevertheless, he is welcomed into the Symposium, and when he makes a speech, everone applauds him (213A). This suggests he has, if not the general approval of Socrates, then at least the acceptance of him whilst in an altered state.

Second Argument

Premise 1: Socrates wants Alcibiades to restrain his fists Premise 2: fish do not have fists, and therefore they are “restrained” in a sense

Conclusion: Socrates would enjoy it if Alcibiades was a fish.

Evidence: 213C-D, Socrates talks about the ways Alcibiades’ love is inconvenient to him. However, none of it has to do with his altered state, only his possessive jealousy, and the fact that “this fellow gets jealous and envious, acts outrageously, abuses me verbally and can barely restrain his fists.”

Third Argument

Premise 1: fish are not conventionally attractive Premise 2: Socrates was not conventionally attractive Premise 3: people do not like to feel inferior to their partner Premise 4: if people are the same level of attractive, they will not feel inferior

Conclusion: Socrates would enjoy it if Alcibiades was a fish.

Evidence: At 215B, Alcibiades says “I declare that he [Socrates] resembles Marsyas, the Satyr.” However, he then goes on to compliment Socrates regardless of his physical appearance, for his wordsmithing is excellent (215C-E). At 218E Socrates describes Alcibiades as having “fine features.”

Fourth Argument

Premise 1: Socrates loves people for their good qualities, not their appearance Premise 2: Socrates considers Alcibiades to have good qualities Premise 3: the change from fish to human is purely an aesthetic one, they retain their mental faculties, so any admiration for the human’s mental qualities would remain the same

Conclusion: Socrates would enjoy it if Alcibiades was a fish.

Evidence: At 218D, Socrates tells Alcibiades “I have no ally more accomplished than you.”

Fifth Argument

Premise 1: eyesight and mental acuity are negatively correlated Premise 2: fish have worse eyesight than humans

Conclusion: Socrates would enjoy it if Alcibiades was a fish.

Evidence: Socrates at 219A claims that “keen vision at the mental level begins when the vision of our eyes starts to go into decline.”

CONCLUSION:

Alcibiades: Socrates would you love me if I were a fish? 🐟🥺

Socrates: (deep and longsuffering sigh) yes.

I’m working on the next chapter of A Tale and hooooooooooooooh my god i just wrote the tenderest moment and it’s KILLING ME y’aaall. when i said this to my partner, whining pathetically and clutching my chest like a southern belle, their response was: “is this the [writer’s] equivalent of laughing at your own joking?” .......................yes.

Socrates Dating Sim (Alcibiades)

Okay. Fingers crossed this works, but:

I put it on itch.io. A few notes.

He has one sprite, and the design is @kebriones. He's not particularly well-drawn in my sprite, but I think it gives a general idea to players.

It was made for my grad seminar in symbolic logic, so occasionally you get questions on logic.

My professor's comment on the first version was "make him more fuckable, we need to feel parasocially attached to him". For this reason, it's more shippy than the dialogue is. Blame my professor.

Kinda bastardized version of my translation. The target audience is people who don't know who Alcibiades is and don't read dialogues. To trick them into reading the real dialogue through this.

Back end of the dialogue basically nonexistent because it needed to be finished for my final lol and I was running out of time.

Occasionally Alcibiades will say a line that Socrates did, summing up something he said (to prevent strictly-Socrates monologues). There are also "jumps" in the game so you can skip through metaphors when Socrates is using four in a row that all say the same thing.

If you do play it, I hope you like it! It's obviously not perfect, but I hope its imperfections can be forgiven.

I also hope it's actually like. downloadable. Idk how itch.io works so I'm really crossing my fingers here.

I did get my grade back for the Socrates Dating Sim, which is a 100% plus some of my professor's suggestions for improving it. Like this:

It looks like it needs more options to oil Alcibiades up. Oops.

And he'd like to see them kiss I think (???)

Anyway. He suggested that I expand this game to include other dialogues, more Alcibiades cutscenes/options, etc. Put it on Steam. He also said he could help me find artists on campus willing to help with the project and make it into a real video game. This leads me to a question, since it's had a little over 20 downloads.

Would you enjoy/support more 'Socrates Dating Sim'?

Yes, more dialogues, + I'd contribute if there was a kickstarter-like thing

im sure im missing some of them but this is my tierlist ranking for some of the interlocutor responses in the dialogues. you can tell how cooked they are basedo n which one theyre using

the phaedrus is no fun at all i fear. when translating it, i like when there's some banter leading up to Socrates ripping the guy up, but it really launches into an entire+ stephanus page of Socrates monologue right away. where is the lively banter. sad and tragic
