Gattuso: I wanted points rather than plaudits for AC Milan
Following his side’s worrying collapse against Napoli, AC Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso confessed that he would have preferred points rather than praise.
The Rossoneri led 2-0 with 40 minutes remaining at the Stadio San Paolo before falling apart in the closing stages to allow Napoli to rescue all three points.
While Carlo Ancelotti was full of praise for his former player and his side afterwards, Gattuso admitted that it meant little to him.
“I could have done without the congratulations of Ancelotti if I’m honest. I’d have preferred points for the sake of morale and confidence. It hurts because we were two goals up,” Gattuso confessed.
“It is a blow to us but we have to put it to one side. It isn’t enough just to play well because football isn’t just about that. Sometimes you must work better and we need to improve.”
The Diavolo tactician also believes that there was a mental issue, rather than a physical one, which set in with the Rossoneri after they took a two-goal lead.
“I didn’t see a physical drop, it was a mental one. After we got the first goal, there was a drop, like a tennis player feels and that wasn’t what we wanted to see happen,” he added.
“After we went 2-1 down, we disappeared and we couldn’t get an understanding of the game. It wasn’t a defensive problem. I said I didn’t want to see a team who crumble when things go badly but after a mistake we fell out of the game.”
