 Performed by two women, the show features music, puppetry, dance and wrestling. While the text is exclusively Shakespeare’s, Rosalind and Celia perform the story themselves. They are two bored debutantes playing pretend. Through their explorations and sports, they work out their fantasies about love, negotiate their complicated relationships with their fathers and sometimes just lounge around making crafts. All their world’s a stage.

Original Character Outlines

Josh: Creating characters and stories is always a pleasure for me. So much of the interpersonal reactions felt very easy and natural - making Max and myself two different sides of the same coin, giving Jaime a ruthless streak with a chip on her shoulder - so it all felt familiar to me. I love the way that each of us has taken these characters and expanded on them with a little of ourselves. I feel like my character started out as someone much more argumentative and weary, and has become meeker as I've injected some of my own personality into it. The weariness and cynicism remained, of course, because that had been true from the start. Obviously.

Original Storyline

Josh: Our original storyline was very strong. We had a clear idea of where everything would move in the play - which is why I'm in part a little disappointed that we've had to throw some of our babies out with the gunky bathwater that was pulling us down. The driving question, "can you really escape your fate?" was what defined this piece of work for me and I feel like our more overt questioning got lost a little along the way. Some of the confusion in our dress rehearsal about where we were came from a lack of clarity in the idea that we were in prison, so our big focus it seems has moved away from the question itself, but rather creating an emphatic prison story. We had a lot of enthusiasm and I'm glad that that element continued along the work.
