Footy Addicts tips to fight the cold while playing football
Have you ever been playing footy and wondered “what the hell am I doing here in the freezing cold while I could be warm watching Stoke v Hull with a nice cup of tea”? Of course you have. We’ve all been there. But what if we told you you could live that healthy life playing on the pitch and still be warm like you’re sitting by the fire? Yes, game changer. Here are our tips to fight the cold!
Layers? Yes, layers.
Well that’s quite an obvious one, granted. But people usually favour warm coats, jackets or sweaters. But they’re wrong! The most important layer when it comes to fighting the cold is the inner layer, especially while playing football for one simple reason: you want to trap the heat of your body. The second thing you need to worry about is staying dry: and that’s why the material you choose is essential.
Wear Polypropylene.
Polypropylene also known as polypropene, is a thermoplastic polymer. You might also know it as « that fabric stretchy shirts are made of ». It does everything you want it to do: it keeps your body heat, it wicks away moisture, it’s fairly affordable and it works better when you’re working out. Yeah. Take that, wool.
Protect your extremities.
The colder it is, the less blood flows to your extremities. Most of of the body heat is lost from your hands, feet and head, and that’s why it’s important to come with the proper equipment. Lined gloves, hat that covers your ears, neckwarmer, those are the must have. But you wanna know something? They make polypropylene socks. You’re gonna be able to feel your feet after a game again. Who would have thought?
Snack and stay hydrated.
You’d be amazed at the wonders water and a snack can do to your body temperature. Now it’s not always easy to find the time to grab a bite while you’re blowing away the opposition with your amazing footy skills. We know. Keep a cereal bar in your pocket, take advantage as a keeper (might as well serve some purpose) to get some water.
Score lots of goals.
Who cares about being cold when they’re scoring top bins after a nutmeg? Not us. Winning trumps warmth anytime. Though it is easier to be a key player when you’re comfortable. So best listen to us if you wanna have a shot at man of the match.
Will it be more comfortable to play in the Spring? Yes. Will you still be a little cold even if you follow all our tips? Probably. But real footy players don’t let bad weather conditions get them down! You just need a little preparation.
What makes a great football venue?
There are many things that go into making a great game of casual football. Sometimes it will depend on your own performance, sometimes it will depend on the quality of your teammates and your opponents. The organisation of a game matters too, with a well-run game resulting in increased enjoyment for everyone participating. And last, but not least, the venue in which you are playing also matters hugely too.
Now, the performance of yourself and/or others is often (slightly!) out of your control. Footy Addicts will take care of the organisation side of things. As for the venue, well that is entirely up to you. And with London, picking the right venue is no easy task, as there are just so many to choose from. Indoor or outdoor, 3G, 4G or old school grass pitch, North London or South London, you get the picture.
Sometimes, however, you will play football at a venue, and it just feels right. You may not immediately know why, but it just has that certain je ne sais quoi, and you end up coming back to that venue again and again. One footballing venue that I would put forward as having that certain something is the Westway Sports Centre. It is, in my opinion, a quintessential London football venue, and one that attracts a large number of players, from many different backgrounds.
The complex itself is huge, with both tennis and football facilities, running late into the night thanks to the bright floodlights. Better yet, they boast an impressive array of pitch sizes, with over 20 games a week being hosted here via Footy Addicts, which dwarfs any other venue. I don’t mind a 5 a side match, but give me a 7, 8 or 9 a side match and I’ll be so much happier. The Westway 9 a side (pitch number 4) pitch, in my humble opinion, is a particular gem.
So why is this such a good venue, a casual footballing nirvana? Situated under a motorway bridge (Westway fly-over), which gives it that London feel that is unlikely you would get somewhere else in the UK. Utilizes boards on the sides, this means that the ball is never ‘dead’ (apart from when it is in or behind the goal). This creates an intense and competitive playing setup, being both physically and mentally demanding, especially given the space that the pitch affords, being particularly sizeable.
Therefore, if you are looking for a game of casual football and you are not entirely sure where to play, I would personally recommend this venue, for you to go to at least once and experience the best of what London has to offer to a casual player. I know I will be.
Game organizer’s nightmares (vol. 1)
Are you one of those guys who want to get a game going asking round but nobody is taking you seriously?
‘Com’ on lads, let’s have a kickabout!’
Well we know the feeling and here we list the top 5 nightmares of any organizer
1. Getting the numbers right
What a process ...
‘Right, we need 14 people for this game, maybe we can have a decent game with 12 as well’
How do you get to find all these players? Phone-calls, emails, Facebook, Twitter, Viber, WhatsApp, texting, friend of a friend and the list goes on and on ...
2. Late drop outs
So, I finally got 14 players for today’s game. Game is on guys! Wait! I just got a text,
‘John and his flatmate cannot make it any more!’
Back to step 1, till you have enough and you decide to go for a 6 a-side game instead.
3. People who turn up late
We have 12 confirmed players, and 5 to 6pm, 4 of us are at the pitch ...
We are sitting around, chatting till we get at least 8 (6.10pm ) and start playing a 4 a-side game, just to jog around and warm up. By 6.20pm we are 11, so we can have a 5 v 6 game for 40 minutes. Still waiting for 1 more to have a decent 6 a-side game ...
4. No shows
The last one eventually never turned up at the game and did not even bother to let us know ..
5. Complains
We had a challenging 40 minutes 5 v 6 game, a bit unbalanced, a bit unfair for one team; but there you go. At least we had a game right?
Well no, you will always get a person not being happy. So who’s to blame? You of course for not organizing this game right.
No wonder, we have so many organizers giving up their games
- Do you have a passion for football?
- Do you have strong communication and organizational skills?
- Do you want to play more football for free?
Why not join Footy Addicts Game Hosts Team!
What do you have to do?
Be on time at the pitch, welcome all members, explain game play rules, hand over bibs and the football. Split teams, so we have a fair and competitive game (if during the game you realize teams are uneven, feel free to swap a couple of players to have an event game)
Make sure everybody shows good sportsmanship and enjoy the game!
