Just like every Old Person Stereotype, my great grandmother played bingo. Every week (and then every month) in the church hall of Our Lady of Perpetual Schistosomiasis** until she got too sick to go anymore, which was right up until she was something like 84.

But she didn’t call it ‘bingo’. She had a special name for it.

My 84 year old, 83lb, Roman Catholic, rosaries-and-novenas, little blue-haired Italian immigrant great grandmother called it ‘Oh-Shit’. Because that's what you shout out when you think you're about to win and you don't. She called it that in front of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

These are my people.
