     all day, there’s been a pit of nausea growing and swelling in his stomach.  every corner he turns, every door he opens, he’s expecting to see rachel  —  he’s expecting this to be a joke or a game of some kind.  he’s expecting her to reappear and laugh and slip off to the ballroom with him as she always does.  but it never happens, and he barely makes it through the day. 

it’s ten o’clock, and he’s shuffling through the door of his apartment, and he’s barely got his uniform tie off his neck, well on his way to the toilet to finally be sick  —  then the phone rings, and he dives across the bed, knocking his ankle into the nightstand in his hurry and not caring in the slightest about the hurt or the teetering lamp.  ❝ hello?! ❞   he fairly shouts into the receiver, and mom’s gonna be awfully taken aback if it’s her that’s calling him.   ❝ rachel?! ❞
