A few weeks ago an article was posted about how slow the internet connection is in the Philippines.
http://technology.inquirer.net/34435/philippines-has-slowest-poorest-mobile-lte-connection-says-report
It is sad to say that article was not able to truly picture out the whole truth about our situation.
But before I shed light to what is really happening let sidetrack for a moment and mention the effects of having pad internet connection.
How bad are we when we try to play games hosted in other countries?
In the past three years of playing DOTA 1 in Garena or joining online games hosted in other countries, I have noticed that there are some who discriminate Filipinos either because of our less-than-friendly competitive attitude or that we usually experience DC (disconnect) from the game. The truth is that I am constantly in low priority pool of DOTA 2 because I am constantly being disconnected. Taking out the fact that we are indeed very aggressive gamers (note some of these players are 9-14 yrs out-of-school youths), let us focus more on the 2nd one.
Now all of us know how frustrating it is to experience frequent disconnection from your favorite online game. Sometimes the problem is with the publisher's server; and usually it is with our ISP (Internet Service Provider). Imagine taking on the most difficult dungeon, slaying numerous mindless peons and solving traps until you reach the final boss. No one in your server has ever reached that far. You could just feel the amount of bragging rights you would have for being the first to clear this dungeon. Even more since you carry an import role in your raid party. Then suddenly your modem pops that red light and that annoying message flashes "You have been disconnected from the game. Please check your network connection"
The Philippines has the slowest internet speed in the world. That is an unarguable fact. I have friends in Australia that I can't party with anymore because every time we do I get disconnected or I cause so much delay. I don't want to ruin their time. I used to play this game called Onigiri which is hosted in Japan and I played the Alpha for the English version. Now I can't even play with the friends I made from this game because I can't level up due to the massive delay.
On the article "State of LTE February" edition, it is stated that Smart Bro's fastest internet speed is 4.3 mbps while Globe is 6.3 mbps. The truth is that those numbers are not accurate. Upon acquiring their services you will notice that the speed should be close to what their brochures are saying. After a month or so the speed drops and most of their customer service will say that it has to do with the area, server upgrade and other lies just to appease your anger. Actually these guys don't even know why the internet speed is dropping. They are just reading a spiel and trying to earn a living. What the article reported was just the information Smart and Globe posted or announced. The truth is that the actual internet speed is lower than those on the article.
I have a workmate that uses Smart Bro "internet stick". Now I sent over some files. It was just two or three word documents, a 5 minute video presentation and one powerpoint presentation. It was over an hour before he could download the files. Well actually I drove to his house an hour later to check what was wrong. I ran a speed test and it showed that the speed was actually below 1 mbps.
Another thing that was not reported on was how stable these ISP are. Yes we do have Globe and its 6.3 mbps but they did not say how stable they are. Take for example the online game Dragon Nest. Some Globe Tatto users are even logging in at 3 in the morning just so they do not experience the delay. Even Smart Bro is now branded as Smart Broken (Smart Bro + ken) by various gaming communities in the country because from smooth connection to sudden spike in !ping
Last is that the article forgot to include PLDT.
PLDT (Philippine Long Distance Telephone) or as most gamers call it PLDC which stands as Disconnection, commands the market due to it being tenured. Currently I am a subscriber to PLDT for almost 15 years for phone and 5 years on DSL. I can tell you that if there was a better choice of service I would open my arms and legs for it.
PLDT has the worst customer service apart from being abysmally slow. It is an un-written rule among subscribers that if you want a technician to come over and fix your connection you need to threaten them with disconnection and transfer to another service provider. Actually even some technicians even lie and say they already went over to the clients house. Just like Globe and Smart, this company's internet speed is not what it really is. Thankfully I have saved this article on a word document because I do not know when PLDT's internet connection would cut me off again.
Current subscribers of these three can afford atleast 20 mbps if it were available in our country. I would use the Performance Package of Comcast (USA) as an example. This 20 mbps package is only worth $39.99 for the first twelve months which is only around P1,700. In the Philippines P1,700 can at least provide you with 2 mbps. That is 10 times the difference.
To sum it up, we are experiencing the worst internet connection in the world. I apologize to all the gamers out there who get irritated when we suddenly leave the game. As much as we want to play, we are sadly incapable of doing so because of how slow our internet connection is.
I do not want to defame these companies but I want them to know that they have to start doing the jobs we are paying them to do.
And to those who are connected with ISP from other countries, try to convince them to open a branch here.
