Animals given as gifts, whether it’s a holiday or just a gift because, often end up being rehomed by the owner or surrendered.
A kitten at Christmas, a bunny for Easter, a puppy for your kids because they want one... Bringing an animal into your (or someone else’s life) needs to be fully thought out.
Are you prepared for when the ____ grows into an adult? Can you afford vet care, toys, boarding, etc.? Do you have enough time or will the animal often be alone? Are you willing to work through any issues such as misbehaving, house soiling, pulling and yanking on the leash? Are you prepared if a power struggle develops? Will you spay or neuter (even rats sometimes need to be fixed)? Can you afford pet costs?
Do you have the patience and dedication to raise and care for the animal for its entire life? Are you able/willing to use positive reinforcement? Have you done research to see what health problems are common or could arise because of the breed? Do you want a pet just because it’s cute or even fashionable?
There are lots of questions that you need to answer before making the serious decision to add an animal to your home. Please, for the animal’s sake, think deeply and don’t rush things. Trust me, it’s well worth it to do all of this.
Remember, when it comes down to it, that creature’s happiness and well-being are the most important aspects of the situation.
A couple more things: ADOPT, DON’T SHOP. And, try to avoid breeders, there are tons of of true horror stories surrounding the industry.
