Writing Observations

Done a good bit of reading today and I have some thoughts.

I want to preface this by saying this isn't directed at anyone. And if you are loving what you are writing, baby go on use grass 20 times in that paragraph. The most important thing is to love what you write.

I am just an unpopular writer in a large sea who samples multiple fandoms. But these are a few common things I see other people do (and have caught myself doing so many times).

Not loving what you are writing - look guys we all want to be popular. We all enjoy kudos and comments. But there is such a huge difference between reading someone's stuff who is just writing for likes and who really enjoys their own stuff. Love your craft. Write your weird shit. Be your biggest fan. Don't try conforming to other people's standards.

Proof read your work - this should be self explanatory but... you would be surprised. Also if someone asks you to beta for them, be honest. Don't be harsh but please tell them they have used grass 20 times in the same paragraph. Please tell them they used she instead of he. Etc. You aren't a real friend if you aren't really honest

Tense switches - look we are all guilty of it. But if you spend half a page in past and then switch to present its immediate brain shut off for me I'm done

Repeating words - again grass 20 times same paragraph. The thesaurus is our friend. They are called synonyms. I am constantly googling 'angry synonym' etc and looking for different words because there's only so much anger one person can express before it should be annoyance

This one is going to be highly unpopular but... writing Canon characters out of character - look there's a LOT of wiggle room and room for interpretation in fanfic. And if you write it well you can sell me anything. But Mary Sueing the people who have such awesome personalities just... takes the fun out of it. It's honestly why I have stopped reading Illario and Lucanis fics for the most part.

Which brings me to my next point, flat writing - look you have a voice. A beautiful lovely inner voice. Your characters also have a voice. It shouldn't all sound like the Dry Eyes man. If you are writing say... third person limited or first, let your character shine. If you are writing third omniscient let yourself shine. And when those characters talk they should sound different.

Piggybacking off that but different scenes should have different tones - this also makes things kind of flat if you always use the same tone. Action scenes should have movement. Feel choppy. Dynamic. Emotional scenes should flow and connect. There should be prose. Softness. Use your syntax to be impactful. I see this mostly in really long chapters/scenes

Which leads to being verbose just to be verbose - look there's nothing that makes me more nervous than to see a chapter is over 3k words long. Not because I don't like long chapters. But because 9/10 if it is someone I don't know they are guilty of being verbose just to be verbose. Literally taking 1000 words just to set the scene. Describing the entire city and what everyone around them is wearing in ridiculously big words that just leave you feeling confused after. And look I know some people enjoy that. Me? I skim. We aren't Tolkien here (and imo Tolkien could have laid off as well no one needs that much tree detail). Give me 10k words of stuff happening. Of action adventure and romance. Not... trees

Look I just want to finish with, you're all fucking amazing. Writing, creating, shit is hard. Putting yourself out there? Pfft

I love each and every one of you. I love your work. I am going to keep reading and adoring you.

Take my words with a grain of salt. This is just me yapping into the void. And if you don't agree with a single word I have said, that's ok. As long as you are happy with what you're doing, that is all that matters. I just know these are all things I have seen and caught myself doing multiple times
