I apologize for this post - it’s not dog related so if you want to see dogs keep scrolling on past - this might get long.
April 9th 1917 began the battle of Vimy Ridge - an important WWI battle for Canada.
It was the first time all of Canada fought together as a nation. Canada took center stage for this battle all four divisions working towards one goal, with support from their allies.
Canada’s other allies had tried in the past to take the ridge but had all failed. 4 days of harsh fighting and Canada had managed to do what others could not.
They took the ridge - but at a great loss.
As a Canadian, I feel it is my duty to remember this - this battle - as many historians say that despite Canada being around for 50 years when this battle took place, Canada was born as a nation during that battle. Other countries saw Canada as a unified country fighting for what it believed in - instead of being a colony, fighting for what everyone else was fighting for.
I feel this is important - as we enter uncertain times ahead - to remember that people fought for freedom and for rights 100 years ago that others are still fighting for today. Please do not take your rights for granted, they were fought for and paid for dearly with the belief that everyone deserves equal rights. Everyone. If you have rights, fight for those who do not - not only because they deserve those rights, but as to not tarnish the memory and sacrifice of those who fought and died for those rights.
Today there is a ceremony for the 100th anniversary of this battle, and while I wish I could be there, I am proud to say that 10 years ago for the 90th, I was there, paying my respects for the re-dedication ceremony. I promised myself there that I would not forget what happened, I would not take my rights for granted, and that I would fight for those who deserve the same rights as I have. This post is a written promise - that I will continue to uphold that promise as best as I can.
Lest We Forget.
