Does anyone know of any books or fics (preferably romance/happy endings) where at some point the hero becomes convinced (probably by the villain, through brainwash or torture leaving them  susceptible) that they, the hero, have hurt the love interest unforgivably?
Like the villain has been hurting the hero and is saying things like “she’s so glad to be rid of you, you forced yourself on her, you tortured her” and the hero is all “what? No, that can’t be, she loves me, she came onto me” and the villain is like “no, she was placating you bc she thought you’d kill her, she was miserable and in agony with you” and the poor broken hero thinks it may be true and just wishes he was dead, thinks he must be a monster?
I’ve always loved the idea of that but I’ve never actually seen it in anything I can remember
